I'm getting a second hand PC to install with linux as a birthday present.... Only thing is, should I get a distro with a Gnome or KDE desktop? I like KDE, easier to work and install software, But Gnome seems to have more features..... WHAT'LL I DO?!
I though GNOME was the easy one, and KDE feature packed. Anyhow, it's really just a matter of taste, they both suck.
i use gnome, i like the look of it better. and at the moment it is easier to get xgl and compiz working on gnome. but i get the feeling the tide is turning in favor of KDE. they are definitely different, but i don't think one is much better than the other. if its an older PC you may want to go with Xfce anyway for the speed boost, i.e. try Xubuntu.
Hmmm...My PC is quite up to date, I'm going with KDE. I found out Freespire does Xgl AND KDE. I find software is easier to install with KDE. .Mo files install quite quickly. I might go with either freespire or kubuntu.
I use gnome on debian and slackware(freerock gnome) kde is ok but I use gnome more often in linux Rofreebsd has a kde environment pretty stable os I installed it last week....
gnome is nicer and more tidy, more "clean" then kde. i feel its much easier to handle and deal with then kde. but that may just be cuz i am used to it. but down to all. its just a matter of what u like and are used to.
I use Gentoo because it's fantastic, so my desktop manager is Gnome... but I'd like to use KDE. KDE has more graphics effects than Gnome, and it's a bit easier to use. I tried "K Desktop Enviroment" with Fedora Core 2, three years ago.
Well, I can't use linux right now, after a big linux incedent with the family PC. But i'm getting a cheap PC Because my Peeps want to encourage me to be really used to all three Operating systems (Mac, windows and linux).
I used Gnome for years then switched to KDE because it used to be more lightweight. But now I just use windows because when something becomes your job you sort of lose any interest in it after you get out every night.
for a fresh Linux user, you will like KDE better. but i prefer Gnome. you can have both though, and there are more than just Gnome and KDE, like XFCE, Enlightenment, etc
XFCE is nice on a slow old computer, and good design, but yeah, still prefure gnome. but if ur after some of that macintosh look, xfce is perfect.
why not install both and check them out? I like KDE best as it seems less cumbersome (lol where did "cumbersome" come from?) anyway it has a lot of interesting features you dont get in gnome and in my experience it crashes less often just as long as you use something other than conqueror as your default web browser
What about Fluxbox?!? I never really liked KDE or Gnome cause I thought it kinda nullified the part of linux that attracted me in the first place (streamlined). But I can see how the average user would like it.
