I am planning on buying a jacket that I can sew my patches onto, but I have a few questions to ask before I do so... I really like canvas jackets but I wasn't certain if the material is good for sewing patches onto it. So what would be the best way to go about doing this? Is there another material to consider?
    Any help is appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Ben.

Canvas is good...probably one the best materials actually for sewing patches onto.

I have a jean jacket that is nearly completely covered in patches (I've been adding more for the last 15 or 20 years, I'd say). What works best is to sew just a few stitches to place the patch exactly where you want it, then start working your way around, sewing nice neat little stitches around the outside edge/border of the patch, going the same direction as the thread in the border, so it disappears (but once you are good at it, a contrasting color looks really nice). If you are covering a hole, it works better to have one decorative patch on the outside, and another patch (I use demin from old worn out jeans) on the inside, with the hole sandwiched between the two.

Cool. I will try to remember that! Sounds like you have a bunch of patches on that jacket. What kind of patches do you have?

all sorts of different patches. I have a purple lizard skin heart that dear friend of mine who is a leather artisan gave me, lots of different souvenir patches from different places and events, a few hippie type patches I bought in Haight-Ashbury when I visited my best friend in SanFran about 10 years ago, some I made myself... maybe I'll take some photos. DH talked me out of selling it on Ebay, but I'm tempted, as most of the patches came from my old life that I've completely left behind ;)

Mama, that sounds like a good souvenir.
I collected badges (pins) and they sort of migrate.

I know it's nice to have something brand new when you're really into a certain look, but, just a suggestion...since you're going for a patch look, why not try getting a decent one at a second hand or goodwill store. Most of their clothes, especially jackets, this time of year, are in excellent shape, ( no tears or holes ), and you'd be saving the environment at the same time by turning something unwanted of others into a master piece I'm sure you'll treasure. Yep, canvas or jean is definitely the way to go for this type of look. Thanks for bringing back old memories too. Haven't had a patched jacket for too long now. Peace, Sherry
