I think your point of view is just wrong. why should punk be almost unknown and away from mainstream? If the diy rules are applied and ppl like it why shouldn't they go mainstream? I am not a fan of avril lavigne, I'm just stating my point of view.

I don't know about 'punk'...there's too many different opinions on what punk is. But I agree with you on DIY. I don't think DIY belongs to any particular scene, but we tend to think alike and we know who we are. Labels like 'punk' get usurped and used against us.

But yeah, whatever happened to integrity? Whatever happened to making music and not 'selling-out'? Making your own clothes and putting something of yourself into it instead of just buying it all prefabricated? I don't know. I'm with you, though.

we'll see how much longer true punk music is actually around. It's almost non-existent today with a few exceptions and of course the numerous amount of bands and performers that have been influenced by punk music, and in that respect it probably will never die.

    But I have my speculations.

I think this thread is hillarious... First of all it is a hippie guy that started it.. I mean for hells sake. Get off of this subject the only one that cares about this is you. All the rest of us have moved on.. You can argue what is punk for a million years and still not know. Wow this is retarded...

(WARNING: long post!... but worth it I think.).Re: Punk (or the way its represented these days) Sucks - Seriously

    Sat, July 1, 2006 - 10:50 AM

I was taught by a certain gutterpunk that I have endless respect for that "punk" is just a name representing the age-old instinct to be yourself in the face of society. He didn't use these words but, you know what I mean right?
I mean, you can be yourself, and that's respectable, but if your lifestyle coincides with society's expectations it's not much of a struggle now is it?

But, anyways, in my opinion anyone being themselves in the face of adversity is 'punk'. (or beat, or hippie, or jazz, or indy rapper or whatever marketting handle they'll come up with next to sell ageless rebellion to confused and angsty teenagers! BTW by 'they' I mean often times the very people who sing or write or yell or blowthemselves up etc. It's the need for fame and power, for celebrity, right? and the Sex Pistols were self described media whores from the start.)

"I'm so punk I'm not even punk anymore..."
Punk as fashion was eventually sold and marketted, (it was a hard sell though because of the crazy-assed GG, Sid Viscious etc style depths these rockstars dove to, either for fame or because they were fucked personally and thought they could be famous for being fucked up, I guess...but their fashion was sold and now how many closed minded people are peirced? how many mohawks do we seeon Pink on TV? and spikes and beercaps clamped on dreads? the more 'out there' the fashion (let's say the more you strech your earlobes) the harder core than thou you're are supposed to be. Even though many people I've met and talked to with wild fashion are really uptight and narrow minded and proud of their stupidity and narrowness.

Fashion is all advertizing to me. and you can advertize yourself as some hard core crazy uncle fuckers and really be a small minded chump, or you can be subtle and, perhaps, sneaky and really contain a powerhouse of truly crazy creativity and dark energy.

(There are allll kinds of different options really.)
Anyways, just my opinion, what the fuck do I know, it's all just words anyways, right?

    (taken from Tribe.
    and the beat goes on....)

Onemantribe: I'm pretty sure everyone here agrees with you. Those principles and beliefs you just explained are the basic ideals of punk, but then again, it's so easy just to regurgitate those words, even if you don't fully understand/full-heartedly agree with them.
It's nice to see that finally someone agrees with me on the fact that the Sex Pistols weren't truly punk at all. Thankgod.

It could be popular, but not mainstream in a since where they just blow up with merchandise and make appearances all over tv, they gotta keep the culture.

yes, they're just words, but these words are put together in a particularly meaningful sequence. i couldn't agree more dude. the concept doesn't just apply to punk, but to art and creativity in general.

the subtle and the sneaky are more difficult to do, but not forgettable like so much junk. the people who don't like it are those who don't get it, because it doesn't scream its message in words that a toddler could understand.

this is the kind of mindset that i think is sadly dwindling in our fast-paced now now now society. people are less inclined to put the time in, and thus get the rewards. it's just easier to accept the culture that has been carefully pre-packaged to appeal, that way you don't have to think.

long posts are rad when they contain substance like yours. the problem is those long rambling posts that say absolutely nothing. anyone seen pronatalist's posts? fuck me...
