A couple questions. First off, approximately how painful is it to have your septum pierced, and what complications could I expect? and also, does it look too, idk, "cluttered" to have both a nostril and the septum pierced?

i have never personally had my septum pierced so i may be wrong by saying this. however, i had planned on piercing it when i was 16 and my friend who had hers pierced told me its one of the most painful piercings, easy to get infected and difficult just to have there. i can imagine that being true so i would advice against getting it pierced altogether...
its kind of creepy looking too.

I used to have both my septum and left nostril pierced. Personally i loved having them both pierced and didnt really think it looked too 'cluttered', although most of my friends and family would disagree. My septum was the most painful piercing i've had done but it's worth it. The shit thing with my piercing was that it was crooked and too close to the end of my nose so i ended up having to take it out :(. I'll definetly be getting it pierced again though,at another piercing shop ofcourse so hopefully it'll turn out better second time round. There weren't any complications with my septum, except for the shitty job they did. It was annoying blowing my nose though!

If you really want them i say go for it! Just make sure you go to a good piercer!

Are you thinking of having a ring or bar in your septum?

    :)

I did my own septum when I was 14 - I pierced with an 8ga. needle and stretched to 6ga. right away (to avoid too much blood, smaller gauges aren't so much to worry about though) and stuck a retainer in it. Pain? Minimal, I thought - but most people have told me otherwise. I don't really know, I seem to feel it much much less when I do my own piercings. I've heard from some people that it was one of their worst (septums and nipples, it seems) but I've heard from other people (a few that had it done, a couple more that also did theirs themselves) that it was one of their least painful or that they didn't really feel it at all.

Complications? Also minimal, or so it seemed to me. Since the opening of the piercing itself (the part that might have healing issues) isn't out where it will get touched a lot (clothing, other people, etc.) there isn't such a high risk of infection. Also, since the nose is pretty much self-cleaning, again, not such a high risk area. Just watch that you don't hit it or get hit in the face/nose a lot (silly me, going into mosh pits right after) and keep your fingers out of your nose (again, silly me, not caring who's around to catch me with my fingers up my nose, haha) and it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I've never had my nostril/s pierced, so I can't tell you. I do WANT to eventually (both nostrils, 14ga.) and since I won't have rings in them, I don't think it'll look over-crowded or anything... but then, I think septum piercings are the most adorable things no matter what.

I also just have to note... I think it's kinda funny how, amongst most people that like/accept piercings and other body modification/art, most people have basically the same opinions on septum piercings, either...
    1) They look stupid/lame (the "bull ring" stereotype)
    2) They look kinda creepy
    or
    3) They're the cutest/most adorable/awesome-est piercings out there.

Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion, blah-blah-blah and some other shit that I'm supposed to say here but won't... I just think it's kinda funny how most people either DON'T like them AT ALL or they just think they're the greatest things ever. Not like a nostril or labret piercing, where you get most people going "Ehh, y'know... they're okay, do what you want." Maybe the septum piercing is the one that makes the most impact?

I really like the bar look personally.

I think I fall under number 3. I love the bar piercing- especially on girls. Everyone seems to have a nostril piercing, so it seems boring to just have that. And yes, I've gotten the "but don't bulls have that part of their nose pierced?" part so many times with my friends. and my mom went so far as to say that she was going to literally pull me around by the piercing if I ever got it(she grew up on a farm, and that's apparently how they control bulls).

I have my septum and my left nostril done. I think the two together look great as long as you have a stud in your nose and not a ring.

I had minimal pain with my septum and absolutely no problems with healing. Most of my piercings have been painless [with the exception of my industrial], but this was painless AND healed with no problem. In fact, the pain went away about two hours after I had it done and I never had another twinge.

I think they look fantastic, though I hate the CBR look. I have a circular barbell in mine and love it.

Haha, yeah, I love septum piercings on anyone, seriously, but they're waaayyy cuter on girls. I used to not-mind CBR's, but now I can't stand them, I keep a 14ga. circular barbell in mine (and a 00ga. black plug hidden with it - almost nobody knows).
Luckily, my parents never seriously threatened me (I did mine myself and NOBODY knew about it for the longest time, it was just one of those things I didn't know why, but I had to do)... my stepdad used to tell me he was going to tie strings from my toes to my piercings while I was sleeping (think, morning stretch, haha) but I told him I'd pierce him in his sleep if he ever did, haha.

And yeah, septums really are SUPER easy to heal, usually.

septums, if done correctly, shouldnt be very bad painwise. there is a specific spot that s easy to pierce and quite painless to boot. an inexperienced piercer will probaly cause you a lot of pain with this piercing, and well, once you hit 10ga or larger the pain increases obviously.. but under that and it can be basically painless

Its all down to personal opinion, if you want them both done get them done. I have my nose and septum done and i love them both. I have mixed reception when i wear my ring in the septum... most people think its not a piercing that girls should have but it was what i wanted and thats why i did it. I found this to be my most painful piercing but this was due to the fact i have had operations on that part of my nose and shouldnt really of had it pierced. it healed fine though and now looks good. If you want it done go for it dont care what others think its your body do with it as you please!!!!

my septum, initially done with a 12 ga circular barbell, hurt really badly. i think it's a matter of the placement, because most people have a space up there in between skin and cartilage that is really soft. you might be able to feel it if you purse your top lip down over your teeth. if its done higher up and hits the cartilage it will hurt really badly, make your eyes pour, and probably bleed...but its just a few minutes really..
