    Hi All,
I am aware that I have a few personality problems and I'm interested starting meditation to help me overcome them. However it's very difficult for me to find out where I should start and what direction I should go.

My problem is basically that I am an unfocused, indecisive person who has a fear of the unknown. I appear to be chaotic to people sometimes and this is especially the case when I'm in an unknown situation. I am easily flustered when something happens that I have never encountered before and I also find it difficult to motivate myself to do things that involve me having to have contact with strangers. In my life in general I always think about what is going to happen in the future rather than focusing on what I have to get done right now or in the near future.

All the above symptoms probably add up to low self-confidence and there are many other methods available to combat this but I was wondering if anyone on the forum could recommend a meditation method which helps someone to become more focused and self-assured in their general life?

    Many thanks,

    Budda

I recommend chanting with Green Tara or Red Tara mantras.

Could you explain a bit about what that means Chodpa? Are taras like chakras?

Tara is a Buddhist/Hindu deity of salvation. Buddhists often take on her sadhanas to produce some benefit such as removal of hindrances from Green Tara and increase of attractiveness from Red Tara. One might say that these things come from within. So then one could take meditation on deities as the means for working with oneself to develop some quality or another. Since karma comes from action, if one becomes the type of quality they desire then it's much easier for that thing to manifest since it will be more resonant. Or so the theory goes.

A good meditation starts with breathing. Be sure to be aware of your breath.

for me, when starting to meditate it was really, really helpful to start with guided meditations. not many people have the patience or know-how to start meditating silently, by themselves. you can usually find somewhere in your area that offers classes on it, or just buy a tape or cd (it might sound stupid, but I started with a meditation for kids tape, and it actually helped a lot to get me started). when you're a little more comfortable with being guided, you can start doing it by yourself and it won't feel so foreign

If you are unfocused start with something that is concrete that you can focus on-a mantra or even a yoga asana. Look into Buddhist Metta Bhavana. Repeating a phrase or doing something physical will focus you.

I have a perfect solution for you. In fact, I have been using this method of meditation for 2 months and I'm satisfied with it. You don't have to focus on anything with this method. All you have to do is buy the CD, put on your earphones, close your eyes and sit back for an hour per day. It doesn't matter if you think about your debts or your breath or say some mantra, it really works on your brain and your spine. By the time, your chronic illnesses begin to recover, your dealing with everyday problems start to improve, you begin to focus on what you want rather than cling on failures.
Please read the scientific information about this kind of meditation and buy a demo CD free. They also include this information audio recorded on the CD. If you become satisfied, you may buy the starting version and continue till what level you want to go. There's no obligation, it's all up to your decision. Give it a try for yourself:

hi there, nice to meet you. it's such a beautoful and brave thing to be so honest, its so refreshing to hear as well.
I'd just like to extend a hand, of love! to you... to say you have a friend in me, i wish you all the best on your wonderful path of discovery and intuition. you seem like a sensitive soul with alot of potential!!!
some of the most sorted people i know are sensitive.. even in their 'older' age.. of fifty, they still have difficulty in new situations.. just becuase they're such sensitive people.

theyre still, brillaint, clear thinking, strong minded good hearted people.. they just have the same reservations as anybody.
    i hope this helps somehow.

    see you around!

That's a good plan. You can also focus on some physical object - a lit candle works well ... or you can just close your eyes and visualize a lit candle and use it as a focal point. My first sensei suggested imagining tea being poured from a teapot into a cup that never overflows.

I also find that a little bit of ceremony can help when I can't settle down - darken the room, light a stick of incense and a candle, put on some soft music that's been recorded especially for meditation. I like Japanese flute (shakuhachi) music for that, some people prefer something New Age or "Celtic".
