Hey guys, well this is the place where i first started when i began dreadz... and unfortunately, due to my new home and lifestyle, my dreads arent doing so well. i love them, but i think im ready to comb them out. they are a year and a half old. very thick. probably someday i will start them again... but for now i need them out. any ideas on how to get them out. i've never used wax... i know probably some cutting will be involved... just curious how others have gotten them out. thanks!
never have but knottyboy has an emergency dread removal thing..but dunno how it works but why do they gotta go? thats so sad
when i removed my first set of dreads. I cut the tips a little and washed and conditioned my hair. I also used a conditioning mask for your hair it was something from avon. then I sat down with a bottle of conditioner and started at the ends to comb out. it took hours and hours and hours and pretty much all of the conditioner. I also had to keep getting my hair wet. a crap load of hair falls out but thats just the old hair that would have normally fallen out of your head over the last year or so falling out fo your dreads. then I used a hot oil and conditioning treatment and got a new hair cut because a large amout of the hair was broken and spilt ends. hope that helps you. and good luck it takes a bunch of time and pain, your scalp is going to be throbbing by the time you finish.
i forgot to mention...if your tips arn't rounded and still have lots of loose hair you may not need to cut the ends off the extra hair at the ends will give you a starting point to comb out. much love and luck
One of my coworkers just took her dreadlocks out...she's had hers for five years... She started out by deep conditioning...also she used oil (olive oil) and soaked her hair in that. Then, she had someone help her by starting at the roots...she took a skewer and worked from the roots down...just basically unknotting it one dread at a time. It took hours, I guess, but she ended up salvaging three or four inches of her hair...and it's all different lengths right now, but she's OK with that.
i brushed my first set out (after only 3 months though). i just conditioned them a LOT. and combed for two entire days. It hurt like hell. and my hair was nasty afterward, but i just started conditioning it everyday and it got better.
edit: hadta remove what i was saying cause u already made your decision & i realized i was only trying to talk you out of it & had nothing in way of advice on how to remove them so outta respecting your decision decided i better just say nothing
I was able to comb mine out after almost 4 years...(I'm letting them dread up on their own this time) I wasn't able to do it in one sitting, so you might want to plan out which to do first if you don't want just one side being dreads. Soak them in lots of conditioner. I switched off using a small metal comb (don't even try using a plastic one) and one of those very large dull needles for yarn. I started at the ends of my hair and slowly pulled pieces out of the knots. And keep adding conditioner as you go, I used an entire bottle.
get that mane & tail conditioner its for horses but they sell it for ppl too its a leave in conditioner that i think should really dothe trick
I agree with soaring eagle (no surprise there) Mane and Tail conditioner is probably best in this situation
