It seems to me that there are an increased number of people lately going "hippy", at least in the US, among the younger crowd. I see a lot more people letting their hair go, wearing around flip-flops, dressing simply, etc. And people getting more concerned about environmental and civil rights issues and being more open minded.

I guess I could be included in this, as far as looks go. I've let my hair grow long and get pretty shaggy looking, and I go around in flip-flops most of the time. Previously, I had a nice, Republican hair cut. Funny how people look at you differently with the addition of a few inches of hair. :)

Anyway, I guess this kind of thing happens when people get fed up with a shitty (more so than usual) government that won't quit lying and fucking things up.

Sounds good to me. I have met quite few young people that seem to be, um, less conservative. I was raised by hippies, so I am no different. My husband is a free spirit, too. He has always had long hair, even as a child. We try to raise our kids to be independant.
I hope you are right. There should be some backlash against the government.

I think being a hippy these days involves more of being politically active. It's good to know that there are still hippies around.

I've noticed that too. There are about 15 hippies, as far as looks go, at my college (who i've noticed) and there sure seem to be more young people trying to make a difference in the world. Still the majority don't seem to care, but it's still a plus.

Maybe it's just because i've become more hippy-like in the past year or so and that i notice it more now, i dunno.

most of the people just dress like a hippy. most people couldnt give a shit about the enviornment or pollution or laws. most will say that the war is wrong, but just because thats what they hear alot and cant give any real reasons other than the fact its war. in my area, im really the only teen who has any clue and even cares about the government, enviornment, and shit....its really a sad thing

    I'm a hippie...

I can see why there are more young hippies. More People are 'going green', more people are aware about the enviroment...Long time hippies had kids and raised their kids with the lessons they have learnt in their youth. Then the grandchildren (our generation) of those hippies raised their kids in that way.

But, more people are adopting the hippie way of life. These people are of Every age and background, from young teens to even OAPS.

There will always be hippies who hold the values and opinions of hippies (bush sucks...iraq war sucks) without knowing WHY they hate bush, or hate the iraq war. Theres always "followers."

I think I can say that there were just as many if not more of them in the 60s. Being a hippy, as much as a movement as it was, was also a trend. It was cool to be a hippy in the 60s, and taht was also why many people were hippies back then. Its the same today.

Im not saying the hippy movement is ineffective or anything in any way- how the hell could I say that?? Its been revolutionary, and hippies have, and always will be changing the world.

To me though, the term hippy is such a broad, vague term. to some people, a hippy is simply someone who weres flip flops (liek the psoter of this thread) and has long hair. the appearance thing is shit. Ive met so many people who "look" hip, but are assholes and are just being trendy and trying to seem cool, and like they are "relaxed, and chill."

To me, a better term than hippy is simply, counterculture, informed, unconditional lover (haha, what if hippies were instead called "Inconditoinal Lovers"...way too long of a term, oder?), or intelligent. Or atleast, thats what I try to be when I am hippy.

Ok, this is a realllllllly wandering post so Ima stop here.

Sadly now that my friends and I are graduationg there will be no more hippies in my school, all the new students (read grade 10's) are metal kids (nothing against them) who are more interested in drinking as much as they can and getting in fights then trying to fix this world so we can hand it on to the children of the future in a reasonable condition

When the culture gets worse, the counterculture grows. So it was in the days of Johnson/Nixon, so it is in these days of Bush Jr.

so true. i had a friend who was gettin round dressed like a hippy but every chance she got she was throwin her rubbish on the ground or being cruel to someone or something for no particular reason. it was really quite irritating to be honest. but her and i are no longer very good friends anymore. not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing. lol

I live in a predominantly Asian area. The next ethnic group would probably be Hispanic, followed by Armenian. The Asians in my area are far from hippie. They are mostly family-oriented and generally very conservative and insulated. Anyone who even hints of making waves around here probably uses local politicians to speak on his or her behalf.

I am/used to be a metal kid, and though I love the alcohol I have never really been in any fight in all my life.

Most metalheads have more values and ideals than most other subcultures anyway, and are definitely environmentally aware (just not discussing it as much as hippies do).

one thing we have to be on the lookout is for fake hippies because sell outs did alot of damage to the hippie movement in the sixties and the seventies

taste in music has nothing to do with being a hippy. thats stereotyping. as is clothing and image. i would almost compare hippys to a political party. all hippys dont have to agree on every little issue, but generally have the same views.the mind is what makes the hippy, not his/her clothes, hair, or music.

id consider myself somewhat hippy, but not all out. yes i have long hair, but because i like it on me better and it helps hide my eyes better when im high:p. i listen to some hippy music like the dead and phish, but i also listen to some rap, grunge, metal. im trying to start a band, but we wouldnt be like phish. wed be more of a wolfmother/nirvana/dead kennedys/chili peppers type band. but like i said i consider myself somewhat hippyish. thats because of my views on the enviornment, war, drugs, gun laws, gay rights, etc. i geuss a better word for myself would be libertarian?
