A lot of the American Hippies on these forums tend to talk about the Dead a lot, but I've not really seen much enthusiasm for them over here. Personally I love the Dead. I haven't listened to them in a while, but they're always good to chill out to. I can see myself being a Dead Head if I'd been around in the 60's. Now I'm almost like that with the Levellers I suppose. Does anyone else like the Grateful Dead? What are your favourite songs?
i heard a few things an they didn't really stand out to me a whole lot. sorry about that :& they're one of those bands i heard of an wanted to get into, but either they're not my thing, or i didn't hear the right tracks to get me interested. suggest any?
Black Muddy River, Friend of the Devil, Casey Jones, Truckin' and China Cat stand out for me. Did you listen to any of them? I've heard quite a few songs of theirs that haven't done much for me either, but when they're good, they're great
An identity aquired in 1990. The saying goes "There is Nothing like a Grateful Dead concert", you just have to be there. I don't know who the dead are nor why they keep following me. Far as I can make out they can't sing nor play to most peoples satisfaction but the spirit of free thought seems to live within the sounds. The band are a political statement similar to the Levs and NMA in england though with a litlle bit more colour. Loads of free music available on the net, every show recorded, and legal. A pretty tune for newcomers would be "Ripple".
I love them! I think my favourite songs are Box of rain, Shakedown street, Playing in the band, Alabama getaway, Fire on the mountain and Scarlet Begonias.
I've got a lot of recordings of their concerts, but have never got around to buying their albums. I'm out of the habit of mentioning them because so few people outside of the internet ever seem to know who I'm talking about
i love the dead. friend of the devil is great, ripple, box of rain, casey jones, one toke over the line. love it all
I saw Grateful Dead a couple of times: once at Ally Pally in the early 70s, then at the Rainbow Theatre some time around 1980. At the Rainbow they played for 4 hours, which included a 1-hour guitar solo from Garcia. Literally a solo: the rest of the band wandered off the stage and left him to it. My favourite album is Live Dead, perhaps because it was the first one I got to know, and my top track off that album is Dark Star. I was at Haight Ashbury a couple of years ago and Garcia seems to have become their local patron saint: you can even buy stuffed dolls of him in all the head shops.
It's weird, I was quite into them 6 months ago but I'm more into political 80s stuff now, oonly dead I listen to is scarlet begonias and sugar magnolia.
I love the Dead, but then again I'm American by birth so... My best experiences are with them live, but I do think that American Beauty and Workingman's Dead stand up pretty well as recorded albums. Quite a few of the "Dick's Picks" series are worth having...
