what do you think caused more to deflate the hippy movement in the 70's; disco music or richard nixon?
Nixon....Disco isn't to blame, Hippyism and disco lived in comfortibly together. Nixon Hated the movement, as these were people who knew Nam would be a distaster. We are seeing this happen now in Iraq and Afganistan. In 1970's america, the Hippie movement got a ton of bad press and had gained an image of stoned crackpots complaining on how the ice-caps would mealt (something that didn't sink in till the late 70's/early 80's). Luckly, the Movement didn't die and Nixon's repitation was in taters after watergate. The movement still lives on... The 70's saw the arrival of disco, witch rooted out those in the movement for fashion and left the true believers in the Movement (alot still stayed in the movement). Really, Disco no effect! The hippie movement still lived on along side disco. The seventies we're a time of change, with 'Nam in the state and the coldwar and Ulster Troubles in europe, Hippies still thrived. To be honest, there have allways been hippies throughout time, it's just that at times they blended in better with society than in others.
What Disco did do to a large extent was destroying rock music "rock never quite recover" and it was finish off in the 90s with MTV around the clock promoting RAP MUSIC OR CRAP MUSIC with Video Help = it work quite well better than the Nazis propaganda machine of the 1930s . Today you can see the results a bunch of dumb kids = and obese ones at that too
Nixon's reputation in tatters the movement still did not recover its original power. Disco however ushered America into the age of "ME" and introduced cocaine onto the popular scene (no cocaine was not created in the 70s but became hugely popular). The association between hippies and drugs was already established and this new drug scene corrupted the picture. People associated pot with coke and hippie became synonymous with addict. In my opinion Nixon might have broken the back of the movement (or at least tried) but Disco broke the spirit (solidarity) of it.
im sorry cocaine was not popular in the 70s "hard to find and very expensive" i dont consider 1979 as the 70s. cocaine became cheap in 1979/ 1980 and had nothing to do with rock music decline.
I don't remember any cocaine shortages in the 70s, I suppose it depened on where you were located and weather or not you had a good connection. I remember a dentist I dated down on Market St, in 71', right before I moved to Underhouse. He had ooddles and ooddles of cocaine, another dude I went with for a few months was a coke dealer in North Beach, he supplied the cabbies, dancers and bartenders with the stuff. Everyone was on coke in the 70's. Speed, Coke and Acid was the going thing. Of course you had your MJ conisuers that prided themselves in defining the quaility and strenght of the MJ, they were into coke too but weed was their forte and they grew the Sensimia and Red Bud. Gotta go built a Witch now. Bye Bye sh
Only well conected people with money had coke in the 70s and 60s. it was only the crack down on pot in the late 70s that cocaine became abundant and cheap enough for the strugling pot head to try it. when coke was clamp down a bit > the next move was crack . being more additive they could sell more . free base around 1979/ 1980 crack around 1981. with 1983 thru 1987 the high point of crack use. by the 1990 most people were hip to the cons of crack = it does not mean it totally went away.
good acid was very hard to find after 1972. speed is disgusting but was never hard to find "truckers used them" . Matter of fact in early 80s it was much easy to find coke or crack than quality harmless pot . To the DEA YOU PEOPLE ROYALLY FUCK UP. We went from harmless "or close to it" recreational drug users to Crack and meth additcs . and METH rivals all the ones before. matter of fact i feel safer around a heroin addit than a Meth one . GREAT JOB = DEA IS NICE TO HAVE A GROOVY WELL PAID JOB LIKE YOURS.
THE MOVES MADE BY PAST PRESIDENTS ,CONGRESS AND the DEA reminds me of Hitler decisions in the Russian upcoming Winter. The Moral of the storie is " you must know when to retreat! . or perish by your foolish decision. or choose the lesser evil.
2 fold um and when 2 run. Getin high iz like ah wave, get off on teh top an mov e on to other higher tingz, like Plantenizum.
gee, powders and acid were available thru the 70s where i was growing up. Probably more speed, but coke was there. I did notice the upswing in the 80s, so my guess is "cachet?" but the the not so serious question, Nixon proved you could live without a heart and disco proved you could live without a soul.
acid was poor after 1972 and was mainly speed sold as acid. i saw orange sunshine twice in 1972 nothing after. qualoode were around and cheap until 1980. then it was gone. the quality of pot went up in the 1990s better than the stuff in the 70s and 60s. but good columbian did float around here and there. the choice in the 80s was coke and lots booze to get rid of the more urge or valiums. the famous artistS and musicians cram in miami beach exclusive clubs to get bomb on coke while miami beach police guarded the entrance door. im sure a few off duty officers were partyING inside including miami PD.
Well Molly, The people who where really into it still are and always will be. It's a state of mind you hope to influence other people with by example. The people who dropped off never got it and never will. Easy Rider is a perfect example of what I'm talking about . You had Dennis Hopper, typical cluless party hardy harmless idiot. Then Peter Fonda lookin for something, not sure, but something! Then you have the commune. The happy people trying there damndest to do what they feel is right, and leave the horse shit fake ass world behind. True pioneers, pilgrams if you will.Looking to start a natural existance with nature. Seems to me the movement still going strong it's just like any thing that grows and evolves. Its got many speices and sub speicies per say. Heres one example,I bet you can think of more. I have a freind who's a vegitarian long hair, does'nt do drugs and has spent many years as an enviormental enigineer coming up with ways to recycle toxic waste. Drives are car to work eveyday....the mans a hippy for sure, right ,and all the others like him who try to get the deaf and blind to pull there heads out of there asses, and look at the mess we're making ! Point is, 99.9% of the people in the televised shit at the time just washed away, as shit does.
From what I've heard, what sort of "killed the movement" was Carter's appointment as president. The casual left saw this as a satisfying victory, and went on with their lives, slipping into the indulgent, much-loathed 80s. As Supertramp and many others have pointed out though, the people who actually cared about the issues and so on still do, and many people who weren't around then do too, obviously. At least this is what I gather.
