    DWBH,
your hair length also shrinks a lot in the locking process, at least on non African hair.
once dreads are mature, combing them out is far more work than it would be worth, given the condition of the hair and how much will have to be cut.
I know of people who planned for the end of their dreads who combed the roots as much as feasible for a few months and wound up with a pixie's worth of nonlocked hair and were able to cut their dreads off but have some hair.

Reasons to do the salon route:
you have no close friends who will rat your hair for hours
your friends are clueless and would burn your hair with cigarettes
you need to look presentable pretty quickly
you like the idea of sharing with a stranger who actually knows what dreads are and won't tell you they are always dirty (that's up to the wearer)
you need to spread the green energy to a place encouraging people to be natural and use less chemicals
(underagers) it's the only way your parents will allow it

reasons to have a friend dread you:
your friend has GREAT dreads and a respect for all the flak that comes between the occasional compliment
your hair is really long (beyond mid back) and your arms would ache for days if you did it all your own
You dreaded your friend and it's return-a-favor time
Your friend(s) is (are) patient enough to do it all in one go

reasons to go it alone, backcombing
    short hair
a span of time (2-3 days) to do it in
    no other option

reasons to (with non African hair) just let it go
you feel the need to make the statement on pop fashion
you really, truly think that a comb will lessen the value of your dreads (forego beads and decorations, too then, as they are "unnatural")
you have situations one and two under salon and no money to invest
you really, truly believe that it is the ONLY way to connect with G-d and the Universe.

everyone has their own reasons for it.
The more dreadies out there, the higher the acceptance for the lifers who need to pick up a job to meet the bills.

i think he is who he is and who he is is someone who wants dreads that look nice and clean. its not like they dont count as awesome just because he didnt go through months of gnarsty frizzies and ripping apart the mats and being yelled at in class for putting your head down on the desk and palmrolling the underdreads for hours on end.

wether your buddies make them with a comb, a salon twists and waxes for you, or time gradually naps your hair they're all dreads in the end and it takes a certain type of person to live with and love their dreads. i think it means you have to be appreciative of yourself, at least enough to ignore the people saying "your dreads aren't REAL, you didnt suffer to get them. you can't possibly be as spiritually enlightened as me, you didnt pick through mats on the back of your head for a year." dreads are a symbol for sure, but they mean something different to everyone.

{in regards to the orig. question} if you want them to LOOK nicey clean and neat backcomb and wax away. if you actually want them to BE clean you can let them form naturally with some "guidance" (rolling, some wraps, ripping apart) or you can backcomb. either way there will be some silliness atop your head for awhile, but who really minds? :p

umm no u do not want wax..
a salon, at least most salons will make such a mess in under a weekyou'll wanna rip your hair out..ofcourse they'll offer to maintsin them.. have you come in and pay more and more for months but in the end ya still wont have dreads
all this has been discussed infinately in dready know how, and every example of a salon or using wax has turnjed out horribly
backcombings certainly an option, but is unnecacary
my 1st dreads wetre outta control as well, but mine now i let happen naturaly from short hair and just maintained well from the beginning
15 years later and theyre way paszt my knees and i love every 1 of them..
your dreads are yours for life..grow into them

    you will regret the salon
gothrough dready know how &? see how other salon dreads came out..they were never dreads..and every 1 ended up starting over natural

I have to put in my 2 cents too. I don't really believe that the method you use to get dreads means near as much as the dreads themselves. If it's a fashion statement, then that's what they symbolize. If it's a spiritual thing, or something done to make one feel closer to the earth and the lifestyle they have chosen...or has chosen them, then really, what does it matter the method? Dreads are dreads. Methods are methods. Let's not get caught up in the fundamentals.

    only way togo ;)

dreads are natural..as natural as can be
so why use unnatural paths to a natural existence?

I had dreds for about 5 months. I cut them off and now that my hair is long enough I'm doing them again. This time I didn't backcomb at all or section off with rubber bands or any of that. I just took strands of hair and did "twist, pull in half, twist, pull in half..repeat" It seriously took me like an hour. It's been about 3 weeks and their developement process has been WAY faster this time.
