Hey all. I am taking a music appreciation class this fall, and It involves not only the history, but actual sheet sheet music, notes, all that good stuff. I've never really studied music as such.

Any suggestions or clues as to how difficult or easy a class like this is?
    thanks

If you want to really get into the music, the best way is to play it. See if you can find any bands or orchestras you can join. Or start bands or chamber groups.

You can learn the history and recite it parrot-fashion as much as you like, and you can listen lots as well, but ultimately that still leaves a distance between you and the music.

Also if you fancy yourself as a bit of a composer, have a go at writing in the styles of the stuff you're studying, so you can try and get inside the minds of the composers.

I once took a music appreciation course and I was terrified that I was in way over my head. But, it was not that hard and I really, really enjoyed it. It also helped that the prof gave extra credit for attending concerts.

Sounds like my cup of tea. That sounds like a very interesting class if you've got a true love of music. It could prove to be rather difficult, but who knows really, if you have the persistance to get through it, you will. I wish you best of luck though, and have fun!

thanks for the replies, I guess I'm just wondering (worried?) if basics of notes etc. are well... basic or very involved and complicated or simplistic. I hope my prof gives ec for concerts, I'll attend all, I love all live music,,, well most

Yeah, I have a suggestion... get out of the class. I joined a "music appreciation" class, and they dicked me over. It ended up a choral/musical class. We don't even talk about music, I hate.
