The purpose of the universe is simply to know of its own existence and the universe does this through a knowing living entity.
The purpose for humanity is to be a knowing living entity that can comprehend the universe.
Purpose = A cup is a cup when it holds liquid.
The universe is a universe when it becomes aware of its existence.
Humanity's purpose may be simply to recognize its existence and by doing so fulfills the purpose of the universe.

How could life be more meaningful?
1. Many humans do not appreciate life but look forward to death.
2. We need to change their minds. Life is known what happens after death is not.
3. To create a sustaining environment one must provide shelter, express and receive love, and successfully create offspring who in themselves can continue with success.
4. With a sustaining life, one can become content and go through life with a sense of accomplishment and this should be enough to put a smile on one's face.
5. When one needs, more they become discontent and search for comfort from despair. When this happens instead of turning to an omnipresent truth to regain that smile simple return to your basic purpose, which is to exist.

We are here…be happy.

I don’t think the universe has a purpose, its existence is born from forces beyond our current comprehension. This is a fact that most people can’t deal with at all. We know that all Matter = Energy and it makes sense to me that all matter in the universe is built from energy. We’ve only grazed the surface in understanding all the properties of energy.

The universe had to be begin with only a few basic building blocks. You don’t have “nothing” and then suddenly hundreds of elements. There was nothing ( or what we call nothing for lack of better description), and then there was energy, I have no idea how or why but the universe got energy from something. And this energy with all its properties blasts through “nothing” and collides with itself and rotates in on itself to create Atoms. Maybe there’s another thing out there that it also collides with but 2 or three things created the universe max. That much I’m positive of.

So the Universe is basically energy, what’s the purpose of energy? All examples of energy that I can think of on this planet are a result of an unbalance. Energy only flows when there is an unbalance or a difference. Energy stops when there is balance and unity between both ends. This leads me to wonder if the all the energy and matter in the universe is a result of an unbalance. If this is true then the only purpose of this blob of energy and mass we call a universe is to disperse into nothingness until the next source of energy occurs.

But it’s not all grim, humans do have a purpose and we are indeed living proof that raw energy can evolve into intelligent consciousness, a consciousness that may someday evolve a full understanding of its own universe. We can hope that it can figure out how to sustain itself for as long as possible. When it’s all said and done, the only thing I know for sure is that I exist. For a tiny flash in the history of the universe, there was some degree of understanding and self awareness.

The DNA in our bodies has struggled and suffered, evolved and survived, loved and hated, fed and starved for at least 100 millions years of evolution on this planet to get to the degree of intelligence it’s at now and if there’s any more worthy a purpose in this universe than to keep it evolving, I don’t know what is.

Thanks for the feedback I enjoyed your comments.
I am not concerned with the how but why the universe exists.
The natural progression of a rose is to blossom into a flower so too is the natural progression of the universe, by creating a sustainable environment, to blossom into humanity.
Can it be said that any other known living entity can reason the existence of the universe.
As a flower exist so too does the universe and this is certain by our recognition of the existence.
Humanity did not evolve with the knowledge that its purpose was to recognize the universe it is the results of our existence.
There is no free will here it is simply what each naturally does.
Humanity would not “be” if we could not reason our existence.
The universe would not be if it could not create an environment capable of sustaining a living entity who can reason it exists.
Any challenge to the accepted norm is corrupted by an overall sense of mistrust and powerlessness to any counter argument.
Before there was a knowing living entity, can there be certainty the universe existed.
Sure, I believe in the theory of evolution but I am not willing to accept that our purpose for existence in any more unique than a flower blooms or a galaxy forming.
It is simply to give completion to the tack of existing.
Whatever the reason for the universe the ultimate purpose is to know of its existence.
As with anything if it is not known, it does not exist.

Easy there big boy...I believe that the universe is alive. The quantum fluctuations that become our thoughts and 'mind' pervade the universe as well. My mind and yours is the very stuff of a living universe.

Try the 'sleeping god' hypothisis for starters. Read Joseph Pierre's book 'the road to damsacus.' That is as good a place to start as any.

But sometimes I can see the funny side of things as well. I was just playing off of Occam's post which I thought was funny.

You need to get a sense of humor dude.

I guess I am having a problem separating Purpose and purpose.

I write of purpose with a little “p.” In other words purpose = reason, function, objective, intent, or use. I in know way imply that the universe knows of its purpose or is involved in accomplishing its purpose or will become aware of its completion. The universe is like a plant but bigger. Its reason, function, objective, intent, or use (purpose) is to create sustainable environments for entities to develop into knowing reasoning beings that can acknowledge the presence of existence.

Nowhere have I said that the universe is a sentient (conscious, alert, attentive, awake, responsive, or unconscious) being or has sentient values.

I hope that I am playing fair and appreciate the opportunity to debate!

Alive and sentinent aren't the same thing. Some one once postulated that the human mind is 'tuned' to a frequency of intelligence that pervades the universe. For there to be a frequency there has to be a transmitter even if that transmitter is the sum total of the universe at large. A radio signal is just a collection of peaks and valleys in either frequency or amplitude or both but it takes a receiver to make the seemingly random hum become a useful message.

I don't follow you on the idea of purpose...I am not being difficult I just don't presently see a purpose in much of what happens. I tend to lean toward a more random belief but I have to confess that that is not a hard core, absolute position on my part.
Let me ask this...what are your views on the purpose of the universe?

last, on my part it won't be much of a debate. I come to this forum often and yet rarely 'chime in.' The ideas and opinions here fascinate me but I often feel that they are beyond me as well.

Purpose is the natural progression of what makes a thing what it is. Without metaphor: There could not be a universe without there being an agent to know it exists. The universe exists as part of nature. Because there are things that naturally appear due to the basic makeup of the universe it must be said that the universe is more than just nothing. The something is what the universe must have to become the universe. The universe is an environment with things. One of the things is an entity that can recognize it exists. The universe does not evolve in the sense you may use evolution because evolution implies mutation. The creating of the entity is as natural development (it exists because it can always exist) as the devolvement of any other form that is present in the universe. You may say that the entity must evolve on its host planet but that too is part of the overall process of creating the entity. It is good that there are some studies that can develop theories for example astrophysics is concern about the how but I am concerned about the why. Why they entity exists is to give completion to the universe. The entity is the final step in the lifecycle of the universe before it starts its journey towards it’s end. As with anything in nature, the universe comes into existence and goes out of exists. The appearance of the entity must happen for the universe to be known. Consequently, there may be many such universes however if the universe never develops to a point where it can create such an entity there would be no knowledge of it.

Now you may ask who cares if the universe existed or not... I say, we do.

“There could not be a universe without there being an agent to know it exists”

I don’t really understand this reasoning because we know the universe did exist before we evolved consciousness. So if we never came to be, there would be no universe? Or are you just trying to reason why should it exist is not to have any being know of it’s existence?

Sometimes it will just hit me like a ton of bricks, “Why does anything exist”? It makes no sense that energy can come from nothing, and if nothing is something, where why and how does that exist? I refuse to fall back on the God excuse, “It exist because God”. My wife tells me. No, God does not explain anything, if there’s a God then he’s even more complex than the universe as we know it. You can’t start from complexity, you must start from basics. The secret to the Universe is inside every little atom on our bodies, 99% nothing with little rotating bits of energy.

The answer to the universe is where did this energy come from? Why is there a magnetic force perpendicular to the flow of energy? Why does it develope physical properties?

All good questions and i have ask myself the same things counltess times and just really can't get a good grip on it all. That is why i still study constantly and ask questions even at my age. Happy is more impotant than wise, though, so I don't loose sleep over it all.

The God "excuse" comes up alot in all of these discussions. If you make the definition of deity vague enough or loose enough, I suppose, then even that term can be slid in. One guy who posted awhile back defined God kind of as something he can't describe but it gives him a warm fuzzy feeling to think about (more or less). I like that.

I agree with you it is irrelevant if the universe knows that we recognize its existence. The universe cannot think or know anything. It is like a plant. However, why would anything exist if there were nothing there to know? That is our job, to know. I do not want to repeat myself so look back at what I have already written. Nowhere do I say the universe is a living knowing being. It is simply part of nature and the result is a knowing living entity.

My conclusion:

I am concerned with why not how the universe exists.

I believe that I have satisfied for myself the reason why humanity exists. It is to be aware of it’s existence. Without humanity, there could be no known universe. The reason for the universe is to create an environment capable of sustaining a knowing living entity that can be aware of its existence. The universe in not a knowing living entity and it is unaware of it’s purpose. An entity, is unaware of it’s purpose until it becomes aware of it’s existence. Without a knowing living entity there can be no known universe. The universe is the platform for which humanity walks. Humanity is the reason why the universe became. Humanity’s only responsibility must be to sustain it’s overall existence. Any dogma that values death over life negates humanity’s function and so doing negates the function of the universe.

Thanks for your help…..goodbye!

nothing has to exist in order to exist. nothing has to resemble what anyone thinks they know about in order to exist. diversity is the nature of reality.

these observations are not infallable, they are merely those i have yet to observe, compellingly to my satisfaction, contradicted.

the implication that existence requires purpose has, in my imperfect and limited experience, no observable foundation.

What is your purpose within your statement?
To create chaos or to imply nothing?

well.. lets see. so you do not think multipurpose then ? :)
what if the universe is to sustain the "living" AND the "dead" matter? or just the "dead" one? what if a cup can hold water, but simultaneously can be used to be cut in half, to staple one half to your wall and the other to your foot and then to be walked on with the knowledge that the other half has a different purpose?
also, universe may or may not be "natural". if your reference to this is, perhaps evolution, then the very definition of the word varies overall. perhaps "unnatural" to describe evolution is not a suitable pro-noun. it is a natural process of gene transformation, where some nuclides off the chromosome are exchanged with others. some mutation produces adaptable genes, some dysfunctional. sort of like trial and error, until it gets to simulated mutation (a result of radiation, etc.)
perhaps you don't need to ask why the universe exist, it just does. the fact that you are aware of it does not make a difference to anyone. you are just one person out of several billion, I am another one, some of us are aware, some are not, and we newer are going to have a common awareness all-inclusive of common reasoning, consciousness, memory and all the good stuff.
