And where did all the opticians go? Did I miss some bad publicity?

A 10 minute visit to the opticians now takes nearly an hour, all because of two extra syllables!

    Greetings from California, LankyMidget!

If you are at all serious in your question, that being,
"What is the difference between an Optician and an Optometrist?"

My answer is; the difference is that, An Optometrist is the individual who performs the eye examiniation for you and then writes the prescription for the corrective lenses that one needs. The Optician is the individual who then makes the corrective lenses and inserts them in the eyeglass frames that are provided. These doctors are licensed accordingly, and an Optician is not adequately trained or licensed to perform the eye examination - at least, here in America, that's the way it is. Cheers!

    Sincere Regards, Michaela

    Greetings and welcome Michaela!

Thanks for clearing that up for me...

It doesn't quite explain how we were forever happy for the optician to do the job now done by the optometrist... And the cynic in me sees this development as a way to create another pay scale...

Even though everyone calls them opticians, the optometerists carry out the examinations as an optician would not be covered under the firm which they worked for's insurance in case anything went wrong.

Basically, if an Optician tested your eyes not an Optometerist you could sue them for malpractise.
