If possible, can someone give me a company I can buy these chemicals at: methanesulfonic acid DL-methionine sodium sulfate and Dichloromethane thank you.
let's see.. methanesulfonic for methylation, methionine is also a methylator (in the body) sodium sulfate for sulfonation, and DCM is a commonly used solvent in extraction. small quantities purchased won't really arouse suspicion, just avoid bulk purchases.
ahh...you know what, scratch that. you're right, Jack It is listed as a suspect carcinogen with TLV (threshold limit values for exposure) of 50 ppm. I'm not one to pass off erroneous data as fact. mah bad chloroform is a bit more hazardous (known carcinogen), though it's TLV is 50 ppm as well, and carbon tet is just nasty, TLV @ 5 ppm.
QUESTION: Is there any type of comprehensive "LIST" on these forums that tell WHICH Chems are either "SUSPECT" or not? I guess what I'm really asking though, is are there any general guidelines as to which ones are safe to order over the net or by mail, and if any are suspicious, what to say in response to valid questions about their intent? Also, are there any companies that are "friendlier" than others, and do out of country companies raise any indue concerns? BEN dOVER.
Does this mean that other chems WON'T raise ANY eyebrows? Say for example Methylene Chloride, or Methanol for that matter? Or how about Sulphuric Acid? I know that most of these are IN a lot of household items, but not without having to distill them out, and take a chance on "God knows what" ending up in the reactions... Are foreign suppliers held to the same guidelines? *(I'm sure that if it being shipped to the U.S. then probably so , but am not sure) Are there any CURRENT lists, or is the 2001 one the most RECENT? Thanks a bunch for pointing me in the right direction. BEN dOVER
I don't think the list has changed much since 2001. I believe iodine was added or will be added shortly. Chemical dealers are always supposed to report "anything suspicious" to the DEA. That might include unusually large orders of common reagents, or someone who appears not to be a chemist (based on their vocabulary or level of knowledge) attempting to order chemicals. Certainly if one was working from a chemical "recipe" of some kind and placed an order for all the ingredients from one dealer the dealer might know what is up and report it.
dopamine, tryptamine, and bulk orders of phenethylamine are now watched, but you're right; the number of watched chems hasn't changed much
While the number of officially "watched" chemicals hasn't changed all that much in recent years, the willingness of most chemical suppliers to sell ANYTHING to the average person off the street certainly has. It isn't just the drug lab situation at work here. Fears about "terrorist bombmakers" certainly play a big role, as does the general climate of litigiousness here in the "land of the free". Because most people refuse to take any responsibility for their own actions anymore, suppliers are afraid of getting sued out of business if somebody does something stupid with whatever chemicals they would purchase. Hell, have you looked at the contents of a kid's chemistry set nowadays (assuming you can even find one for sale)? No more oxidizers, acids, bases, solvents, etc. Quite a change even in my lifetime, and the process had already begun when I was a kid. I really wonder how we will develop the next generation of scientists and engineers when the tools of discovery are being kept out of young people's hands. And the government is starting to harass the few remaining sellers of scientific supplies who still target the hobby market: http://wired.com/wired/archive/14.06/chemistry.html
heh...I got 10g of uranium metal from him, even corresponded with him a couple of times. he's fairly down to earth, and he's got a nice site
"It is illegal in Texas, for example, to buy such basic labware as Erlenmeyer flasks or three-necked beakers without first registering with the state’s Department of Public Safety to declare that they will not be used to make drugs." hah, that's where I heard it b4... funny, when I lived in NM, I just walked into a chem store in Albuquerque and got a pint of chloroform, and a Labglass sep. funnel, n.q.a.
