    Does not matter what kind
For example the early nineties rock scene in Seattle (Alice in Chains,Mother Love Bone,Green River,Nirvana,Soundgarden,Peearl Jam,Fastbacks)
the Trip Hop scene in Bristol (Portishead,Massive Attack,Bows,Tricky)
etc. This is not focused on one style. There are just cities with an incredible music scene,in some of them like Bristol rose lots of good acts of one music genre in a very short time.

It's a mushroom effect. Read the biography of your favorite grunge bands and you'll very often read the line "and then we packed up and moved to Seattle". Now, how these things actually get their genesis is a different story. Maybe the constant rain makes for a gloomy atmosphere that made grungers angry, I'm not certain.

I just moved to Seattle, and since it's summer I've seen hardly any rain... I think it's the idea that lots of artsy people live around the area, it's a very art fueled city. Plus the area is beautiful, which probably doesn't hurt. Anyway, musicians around a city like this have a great atmosphere to grow and mature as artists, I guess. It's sort of a mutual relationship, musician and city. The city fuels the musician, who grows up and fuels the city. Then, people move to the city where the great music is, leading to more musical growth and exploration. What a great thing... That's my take, anyway.

Blew my mind, sublime! haha. You have a great theory there. I think it beats mine. Too bad I had to leave Memphis. Des Moines doesn't really "fuel" anyone. But, I think I'll either go to B.C. , Alberta, or North California in a few months anyway. Should help my artistic vision.

Well it's been churning out bands for decades. You had the 60s wave of the Beatles, Pacemakers, etc. These days it's the likes of the Coral who are carrying the baton. It also produced the likes of Cilla Black, but we don't talk about that ;)

wtf do u mean is doesnt apply to what kind? all that music you listed is fucking grunge rock, Seattle is NOTHING compared to the hip hop scenes of New York and Detroit, Hip Hop is getting so big with it's new wack styles that it's rarely cities anymore, it's either mid west, east or west coast.

Actually, there was a time in the late 70's when Akron, Ohio (where I live) was thought to be the next Liverpool. People in the UK were all talking about the "Akron scene." Heh, funny...
