I admit, I used to be one of those people who would feel "bad" (for lack of a better term at the present) when one of my beloved 'underground' bands would make it big. The most stunning example being the Flaming Lips...been around for 20+ years, and in 2002/3 they "make it". Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, Radiohead (they were pretty 'UDG' a while back), Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Postal Service to name a few. But, of late I realized...that it's cool..it's disco if these bands make it. Next big things...The Comas (they are sooo good), Iron & Wine, The Unicorns, and with this aquarian age: the revival of 'classic groups/artists/projects' (hopefully) I will always be annoyed by SCENE KIDS/HIPSTERS (except for Kramer...that hipster doofus).
I guess its like you worry if they make it big that they lose something in doing so but no I don't think about it I just think its cool cause you know its what they want
Well, I KINDA feel that way. For example, one time, I was with a girl and she was flipping through some woman's magazine of some sorts. Then, all of a sudden, I notice something familiar. I make her turn the page back, and I was horrified by what I saw... it was The Velvet Underground & Nico album cover... on a shirt... worn by... ONE OF THE OLSEN TWINS! I about shit myself. Not only was an Olsen twin wearing the shirt, but it was in some lameass women's magazine that frequently discusses Hollywoods scandals and that kind of bullshit! That's just horrible.
yea i dont like people that wear the band logo enshit and know maybe one song but they just arent into it...its just so frustrating. its like they are trying to conform to all different social groups **example...girl i know that cheerleads, is waaay into football, goes to the phish concert (doesnt know a single song or dance, tries to pick up guys), and to complete circle she also is semi-goth? can this be explained? be yourself!! theres nothing worse than being a parallel to someone else! its boring!! individualism is one of the only freedoms we have left!
Yeah, I know what you mean. I know this guy who always wears Led Zeppelin shirts. So I was talking to him before, and I asked him about Zeppelin and he said they were his favorite band. So I asked him what songs/albums he likes... he didn't know any. He doesn't own one Zeppelin album, yet he wears Zeppelin shirts and claims that they're his favorite band. Haha, all he has are some CD-R's of random Zeppelin tunes that someone made him.
VU isn't so underground now is it? A. She really likes the band and feels a need to show her pride in them, or B. One of her popo-bubblegum designers told her to wear it. I'm going with B.
Like people can't even wear t-shirts anymore? Just cause they may or may not know the music... maybe they like the shirt? And that isnt cool enough? It isn't "underground" or whatever-the-fuck. The damn Olsen twins already... are you guys just pissed cause they have enough money to buy the actual name "The Velvet Underground" and practically shit on it if they wanted to? Can't they support some band they've never really heard of but maybe they liked the shirt... maybe they made some sketchy agreement with the velvet underground to promote their band by displaying their band name all over their anorexic bodies... ? Christ.
Haha, I don't think so. I couldn't see Lou Reed "joining up" with the fucking Olsen twins! Hahaha... that'd be the day. If he did that, he'd need to be killed.
yes, it's horrible. To me, the VU is underground. No one around here knows them. I don't like it when one of my favourite bands becomes really popular, or when they have a big hit, and they're constantly shown on mtv or played on the radio. I don't think the fans of the Olsen Twins will start listening to the VU just because their idols wear a VU t-shirt. The VU is just too experimental for them. I can't understand why the Olsen Twins would listen to them in the first place. Why are they wearing that T-Shirt? Is it so cool or trendy? I mean, this is 60's music, this is old music your parents (could) listen to (that's not my opinion, that's what most teenagers would say)! But maybe the Olsen Twins just like the banana on the cover of the album, and not the music (i just can't imagine them listening to 'Sister Ray' or 'European Son'). So maybe they just like Andy Warhol and not the VU. (Until a week ago i never heard of the Olsen Twins, but then i saw them on the news. Now i know they (or one of them) used to play in 'Full House'.)
Yeah, I could never see them listening to "Sister Ray" or "The Gift" or something. Haha, yeah, I think they used to each play the same character, so that way the studio get around the child labor laws or whatever and have her in more of each episode.
Yeah, but Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, and The Postal Service suck. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are typical New York bullshit. And Radiohead gets really fucking boring at times. The Flaming Lips, however, have been in my heart since I listened to In A Priest Driven Ambulance.
I think they were just too coked up to realize it said Velvet Underground, and not Velvet Revolver. But I'm glad, because Velvet Revolver sucks taint.
Hahaha, maybe, you never know... but I doubt it. Some fashion designer probably picked the shirt out for her.
I know exactly what you mean. Another example of such idiocy is that retard sister of Jessica Simpson, in her music video and a scene where she's working out with her personal trainer at her side, and all the while sweating all over a lovely Led Zeppelin t-shirt. I mean, in the first place she probably has no idea about anything Zeppelin did as musicians, and secondly, wears the damn shirt to work out in, of all things! Made me ill, to say the least. :$
