It always astounds me when I see people who drive to a gym and then go and spend an hour walking on a walking machine ... why didn't they save themselves the petrol money, the journey time and the gym subscription fee and just go for a walk? How much exercise do you get? Is it part of your daily life or do you do it special like? Are you fit? Do you walk / cycle to work or school, or part of the way? Could you?
I used to swim loads and work out in the gym. I was quite fit when I went hiking in the Andes, but am not so any more. Still have a bit of muscle and still walk briskly every day for about fifteen minutes, but I could do a lot more....
For reference here is David Bellamy, his lithe and fetching physique is the UN's Internationally Recognised Fitness Reference Point.
i do lots.. until i lost my keys I cycled to uni 5 days a week which takes abotu 25 - 30 minutes one way.. I also go to the gym for an hour 3-4 times a week.. its my new healthy regime i started about a month or two ago.. and i feel so much better because of it!
When I'm in a marching season I get loads and loads of exercise. Being out in the sun 8-10 hours a day (and sometimes more) during the summer when it's a million degrees out really whips you into shape quickly. Right now, during my off season time I do weight training for marching percussion during the winter, which takes a lot of upper body strength. Since it's cold out and I'm not doing as much outdoors as I usually do, I go to my school's weight room a lot after school and work out there. I'm not really in the greatest shape right now, I have a long way to go, but I'm working on it and getting there slowly...
Im a shadow of the fellow I was , this I put down to a lack of hard work , I keep talking about anvils and never buying one . Personally Im not a person for fancy "city folks"gyms although strangely I do have a multi gym thing in the house , but I believe in getting fit by chopping down trees , digging, or whomping hot iron , or walking for days with a bergen. anyway I may suddenly change, I dont think you need to spend ages getting fit if you use the right method , a couple of weeks digging out a mine would put me into terrific shape I know
In the international standard for measuring fitness I'd say I'm about 1.7 Bellamy. If you're fitter than David Bellamy (and he's not as unfit as he looks, for a codger he's doing OK) then you count in multiples of Bellamy. If you're less fit you may be say a three-quarter Bellamy or a half Bellamy (also known as a Bell). What's your Bellamy?
Tell me, are there any Bellamy-approved fitness techniques that people should work on? I currently walk everywhere (no car) and try to do press ups in the morning (bad right wrist means I have to give this a break every month or so)
I think just walking around instead of driving everywhere gets you loads of Bellamy. I've taken to Bellamying about 3-4 miles instead of getting on the bus, saves me a couple of quid and I get fit at the same time. I usually Bellamy everybellamy by bike but I Bellamied my knee so had to Bellamy it a Bellamy. But Bellamy I try and Bellamy about Bellamy Bellamies in a Bellamy.
Get an occaisional stroll to the shop or school, say 3 miles there and back, beyond that everything needs a drive. We do the odd bike ride in the summer. Not enough though.
every couple of sundays " i go out with the ramblers to the lakes "wales "peak district " yorkshire etc etc "they have 3 graded walks (a= av 15 miles ) ( b= av 12 miles ) (c= av 7 to 8 miles ) i like doing c walks" as apart from a bit of exercise i enjoy the sightseeing and taking photies .
