I just wanna throw in my two cents on pit bulls...
We have two pitbulls and they are they most awesome, humanlike dogs I have ever had. I have a tiny lil' kitten and a four year old son and they are wonderful and gentle with both.
They have huge hearts but they must be in the right home. Pit bulls are not for everyone!!!
They need the right training and socialization from an early age. They need to be part of your family and not just a "pet"
Our dogs, Ziggy (hundred pound male) and Rah-Girl are the biggest babies around us... they insist on sleeping under the covers and being total lap dogs. But if anyone tried to get into our house or car they turn into demons trying to tear whom/or whatever into pieces. When travelling across the country we never felt safer than when our dogs were all with us (we also have a german shepherd mix)
All our friends from out in southern Oregon (where we used to live) have puppies from the two litters Rah-Girl had. All have turned out to be such awesome smart dogs. I will always own a pit bull from now on.
You should always be very responsible with your dogs (not just pit bulls) Our male hates other male dogs and will instantly get in a fight if he is not under control and our female hates other alpha females... so needless to say this requires a lot of attention from us when we take them out.
All the work is worth sharing our lives with these beautiful dogs.

Do any of y'all have pitbulls and wanna add your praises to this thread?

    That is wonderful :)
Do totally agree that training/socialisation adjusted in light of the dog's personality and breed traits is so important; people should be made aware of that so they can be responsible guardians. Not this absurd witch hunt.

Our dog really likes big/'dangerous' dogs; rottis, mastiffs, boxers and such. Probably because those we have met are so good to him. Only real danger is he's a cocker pup so they might squash him.
Where as supposedly smaller/'nice' dogs can be just horrible. So I go by a dog's personality more than their breed.

i have raised pitbulls all my life, and i agree. they are unbeleivably human-like and really sweet. my dogs wouldnt hurt a fly & are real good around kids, even babies, theyre real gentle and loves other dogs and animals. i say its all about how you raise them. if you neglect them, clip theyre ears, and train them to fight, which is what a lot of people in my town do, of course theyre gonna end up being mean or snapping. i think its an issue with trust. all the pitts ive ever had were real sweet & trusting, because we never gave them a reason not to trust us. one of my dogs in particular is real mellow.

I'm in Florida, home of the pitbull:) and they can be very sweet if they aren't swinging by their teeth from a tire roped to a tree or chomping hogs, but they have that potential for doing a lot of damage and they ARE hunting dogs, not companion dogs (not that they don't make excellent companions, besides the shedding, yuck)
I had one that killed all our yard animals before we got rid of it and another mixed w' wolf that was real sweet, but his siblings sure weren't.
In Colorado there is a $100,000 insurance policy required for pitbulls because of the frequency that they maim (and a lot of nice pet pitbulls do bite when worked up).
Colorado is the home of the Black Lab.
I like little dogs and they aren't all horrible any more than pitbulls bite (and you dont get sued).

It's laso incredibly important, especially for multiple-dog families, to know that male pitbulls are usually pretty aggressive towards other male dogs. If you're going to keep two in the same space (house, yard, whatever) they should definitely be neutered, and supervised for the first while.
Females are VERY protective of their puppies, too. Moreso than most other female dogs.
These are the real reasons most "good family dogs" end up snapping and turning on their owners - they feel that their "personal space" is being violated by some sort of outsider - whether it's a female with her litter snapping at other dogs/people, or a male seeming overly-aggressive towards other males.

But yes, I agree, the ones that they've targeted with BSL and other "dangerous breeds" lists and restrictions are generally some of the best family dogs. They're known to be aggressive - really because they're super smart. Train them right and you'll end up with your dream pet... family, hunting dog, whatever. Train 'em wrong (or not at all) and you'll probably end up with a dangerous killer, simple as that.

So I say, we should be euthanizing bad dog-parents, not the innocent babies.

Our Pit Bull Mick is so sweet, They do get a bad rep...But when you don't feed your dog and let it hang on a chain 24/7 and the dog bites someone...well...It's not the dogs fault its the sick person who let their dog be hungry and hang on a chain...If I were a pit bull and I was hungry/chained... I would probably get a attitude too.

Here are a few pictures of mick and (brother and sister) Morrison (black) and Molly (white) Mick loves his kittys and mothers them like crazy...He is the most human like dog I've ever had... He's 2 years old and smart as a whip

Beautiful dogs you guys :) I wish i could get some pics of my babies on here.
Oh and as for the protective mother deal, our female, Rah, has had two litters and was completely chill with letting people handle her babies. She's obsessed over puppies, it's hilarious, even if she sees a tiny dog she thinks it's a puppy and won't leave the poor thing alone (holds it down and proceeds to bath it or tries to carry it away) All of our dogs are unaltered and Ziggy does hate male dogs, we've had a few dog fights at our old home before but nothing too serious and we just have to be responsible with him. My boyfriend has dog bite scars on each arm where he separated a fight between Ziggy and his dad Marley where the both latched on to either arm.... eeek....

My friends have several. Beautiful dogs, with jaws like none other. Pit bulls need to be beaten, and I recommend teaching your females to take it from behind.

down here they use them for hunting hogs so I think there are different types.
the things I've heard make them aggressive is shaking their heads around when young and having them bite tires and be tied up. we had them in our neighborhood and they were nice dogs with their bitten off tongues from hog hunting.

If they ever bite you it means you don't belong anywhere near them.

In Colorado you have to have a 100,000 insurance to have one; nobody does. Now in FL it's like a requirement or something.

The pitbull gets its reputation from bad owners/trainers/handlers. I own a pit/boxer and he is a sweeet little baby, very sweet and never crotchety.
