So... America becomes a gulag.... October 26, 2006 Forget no-fly lists. If Uncle Sam gets its way, beginning on Jan. 14, 2007, we'll all be on no-fly lists, unless the government gives us permission to leave-or re-enter-the United States. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (HSA) has proposed that all airlines, cruise lines-even fishing boats-be required to obtain clearance for each passenger they propose taking into or out of the United States. It doesn't matter if you have a U.S. Passport - a "travel document" that now, absent a court order to the contrary, gives you a virtually unqualified right to enter or leave the United States, any time you want. When the DHS system comes into effect next January, if the agency says "no" to a clearance request, or doesn't answer the request at all, you won't be permitted to enter-or leave-the United States...The rest

I haven't studied any American Constitutional Law, but aren't travel rights enshrined? They are for most countries. In Canada, the Section 6 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms reads: 6. (1) Every citizen of Canada has the right to enter, remain in and leave Canada. (2) Every citizen of Canada and every person who has the status of a permanent resident of Canada has the right a) to move to and take up residence in any province; and b) to pursue the gaining of a livelihood in any province. (3) The rights specified in subsection (2) are subject to a) any laws or practices of general application in force in a province other than those that discriminate among persons primarily on the basis of province of present or previous residence; and b) any laws providing for reasonable residency requirements as a qualification for the receipt of publicly provided social services. (4) Subsections (2) and (3) do not preclude any law, program or activity that has as its object the amelioration in a province of conditions of individuals in that province who are socially or economically disadvantaged if the rate of employment in that province is below the rate of employment in Canada. I'd always been under the impression that mobility rights were fairly universal to industrialized countries.
Just business as usual with the government eating away at what one may presume to be human rights. People in general need to be alarmed at this and too many are too damned comfortable to be concerned that the rights and freedoms of them and their children are being sold out.
well I went to the city hall today and asked the passport office about this and they haven't heard anything of this sort. you still need just a passport.
yah but I had mentioned DHS and 1/14 and all the details you mentioned and they hadn't a clue. is this trying to be passed under our noses so secretly that passport folks do not know? that is so sad and frustrating.
http://www.nationalvanguard.org/index.php I believe they may have got the information from this kind of ..."document" a publication by the extreme right (about 2/3 way down the page)
damn, shit is crazy. what are we gonna do? if they ever declare martial law or shit like that. what are we gonna do then?? It's going to be a fucking war.
However on the positive: financially this is not really feasible. Plus it would not coinside with EU flying regulations. This would end up being a huge hassle (for DHS) in the long run and very hard to consistently enforce. I mean where would the funding come from to do this for any long periods of time come from? I checked the DHS site and they have no new changes on the horizon. well they do have future regulations stated, but this is not one. They would be required to warn people ahead of time, like any other change in operations. you can't just pop up on the 14th and suddenly suprise people who are legitamately unprepared.
Like that's ever stopped the government from implementing policies that infringe on human rights before.
yahhh but this is INSANELY expensive and the workforce required to enforce this is very very high. plus the delays it would cost in flights and money it would cost airlines in the long run. plus how do you realisticly check the background of every passenger on the flight in... lets be generous and say 5 hours..especially when you have people boarding until the last 15 minutes. than again, not meshing with other countries policies to the extreme would cause us to reroute so we don't fly over said country. us airlines aren't doing so hot as it. and to hinder business flights and hold them to this standard, it would hurt the very country. but I have been suprised before...just saying DHS needs to overcome all this.
I am not saying it can't happen. but these are huge cons DHS may not consider enough. I mean, you have to refund people lost money for missed flights or preventing a person from boarding. a lot of people with the same name (as far as these no fly lists are concerned) to complicates matters too. we shall see...I know there have been some disatrous blunders in history before.
Well, the US government has shown how they can control the travel of some at a time of a no fly zone: http://newsmine.org/archive/9-11/binladen/family-exit/binladen-family-flown-out-of-us.txt Yet they can't control the continuing movement of millions of illegal mexican workers. I think it depends on who you are.
