is there anyone in these forums that was at the monterey pop festival in '67? if so, would you be so kind as to share you experiences here?
Dolly-I was in the city then and it would have been about a 100 mile drive but as I had been listening to all theses same groups already at the Fillmore ; I said nah-Remeber-prior to that festival these same bands were playing free in the parks -why travel 100 miles and pay to get in?-hippy economics!
^^ point seen i have the movie, and i always daydream about what it wouldve been like to have been there its quite beautiful
Have you ever been to Monterey?-It is real pretty-I grew up 60 miles north of there an my sister went to law school there-Santa Cruz is a wild place just up the road and we used to ride the waves there-Great surfing-The festival was the first time so many hippies were filmed -I would say maybe 99 % of the people there were ripped on acid-I don't do big crowds when I'm that high-or used to be I should say-The concert halls in SF were nice and cozy and made for a very safe' secure setting and with Janis and Jimi playin why leave town?-I skipped Woodstock for the same reason-Way too many people and the whole hippie thing was over by then anyway-now it was a photo op for Life Magazine-The same groups that played at Monterey also played in the city most ly that same week-and no big crowds-see what I mean?-The acid was REAL strong and your place to trip was real important-the difference between a good high and a bad one-But then I never went to a Giants game loaded either-
hehe.....I concur....Im not a fan of big crowds either(esp. ripped) Ive been to santa cruz....great town, great surf!!! love steamer lane.... we didnt make it to monterey....next time, however
Are you a surfer?-I lost alot of boards at Steamer Lane-The cliffs there are nasty as are the swells in winter-My sister lives there-a lawyer-Hint-Before you go to Monterey get and read a copy of the book Cannery Row by John Steinbeck and it's sequel Sweet Thursday-All set in Monterey when it was a big fish cannery town-Very funny stuff and true!-Steinbeck grew up right there in Salinas-Then allow another day or two to drive down a little further and stay or camp at Big Sur-Look up Phiefer State Park-they have a web site-you can stay in a campground or a motel and the air and the sea is magic!-That whole area is magic!-Bring a good camera-We used to hitch down there and camp out (free) for days living on nothing but loaves of Sour Dough' Monterey Jack Cheese and gallons of Red Wine-hahaha-and others concoctions-I was thinking of taking a drive down there pretty soon myself--have fun-but remember-it's not 67' anymore and bad things happen to good people so-be careful-unfortunately the days of innocence are gone-
Dolly-Ya got me thinking about that place-Monterey and Big Sur-Heres a funny little story for ya-After camping out for about a week in the woods there in Big Sur; me and my buddy were real dirty and tired and hungry and started thumbing home-Yea -back then even under those conditions people would give ya a ride!-So we got to Monterey and we had just enough to eat at this all-you-can eat place-Well when we walked in the manager didn't trust us to pay after we ate so he made us leave our bags by the register as colateral!-We were a little pissed but started eating-it was about 30 minutes till closing time but they can't kick ya out as long as you are still eating-so we would eat a platefull of food then go to the restroom -do some jumping jacks and "elimanate it"-we did this 4 or 5 toimes and they had all the lights in the place off except the one over our table-lol-we kept piling it in-You could see the manager getting pissed-it was now 20 minutes past closing-well we were in the mens room jumping up and down and laughing about this not knowing the manager was in there sitting on the throne-he comes out and starts givin us hell-We told him he should learn to not judge people by the way they look and not jump to conclusions about a persons finances based on the way they look-especially in that part of the country-!So; we had a good laugh and rolled on outa there with a lota of stashed fried chicken-Best 3 bucks I ever spent!
your question if I surf?? yes....in fact, i have a pic of me in my gallery out here at my home break hitching rides and long gone days on innocence....<sigh> I guess thats why I have such a facination with this era. I have heard MANY stories from the elders around here about their travels up and down the coast, cross country, etc all by hitching rides and 5 bucks in their pockets......ive said it before, ill say it again.....born too late
So have you read Cannery Row?-It was a fun time most of the time-The only bad times were when we went somewhere like New Orleans in 67 with hair to our butts-Very dangerous!-As long as you lived on the East or West coast you were ok-Colorado was cool too-their were lean times though now and then-Call me from Big Sur!
:jester: Monterey Pop was a cooool party. They don't make them like that any more. arty: arty: arty: PEACE
