Please Wipe and don't delete!

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Please use a program like Wipe in Linux or a similar program in Windows to actually destroy sensitive data. My son's best buddy is doing time right now because he "deleted". Delete is only a command that marks a portion of a disk to be rewritable. It does not erase or destroy or remove the data in any way. Forensics programs can recover several layers of data before it unreadable. It is like writing several documents ontop of each other on one page in different color inks. Each document can be read using a color filter. Wipe is supposed to securely erase the data. For more information about Wipe visit: http://wipe.sourceforge.net/
Our mothers or fathers taught us to wipe our butts after we pooped when we were toddlers and to wash our hands afterward. If your computer has poop in it and it needs to get rid of it, remove the data by all means. But............

Thanks - nice image - I hope I can now wipe my data without having to think about pooped undies or butts - hell - I wipe data every day but I may have to stop doing it - I just cant get that damned image out my mind and I'm wincing about it -
sjust like my mom - she's always tellin me about livers and kidneys and sores and stuff - its like hey - bodily functions, ya know what I mean, I do all I can not to think about em !

i make it a rule not to tell people too much about what security I use -
but data doesnt necessarily have to be illegal to get you in prison - just has to implicate you in something illegal - data can be made to look sinister even if its not - especially if you visit hacker sites and do heavy research at conspiracy sites and/or make dangerous political commentary at forums etc
quite a lot of data coul implicate people in crimes they didnt even know they were committing.

 

yeah it was illegal. like porn that had jailbait in it. Not the kiddie kind but the girls were not of legal age. He realized it after he did the viewing and downloading and got scared and deleted. His cousin got pissed off at him and made a little phone call to the cops. I don't know how his cousin found out about the data but I think he was fixing the computer for him. I told him about file wiping programs but obviously he did not listen. He fought it long and hard but the cops won in the end. His life is a shambles and his girlfriend is pregnant and due in May. She doesn't know if he will be allowed to be around his own kid once he gets out. All because he mad a mistake. And did not listen to his other Mom. That is what he calls me his "other" Mom. So always listen to your mother if she is giving you good advice. Especially, if its gonna save your butt in the future.
