I think that it was for no reason...maybe the chicken wanted this debate to happen so it crossed the road to start something biiiig.
it's all an illusion. the man hired the chicken to cross the road, made someone go there and witness it and then take him away. so when he tells his friends about it they start the epidemic we know today as,"why did the chicken cross the road."

Maybe its all a metaphor for something bigger. Maybe the fact that the answer to why did the chicken chicken cross the road (the question which brings up so much debate) is to get to the other side is showing that this thing which so much hipe is being made about is in itself pointless. Like our lives, even the most famous of people are completely unimportant and meaningless in the big picture of the universe. Nothing we will ever do will influence anything outside this solitary Earth, an existance prone to meaningless in which we have no power to influence something meaningful. Noone knows why the chicken crossed the road. Indeed, philosophers have queried for centuries whether in actual fact it's been the same chicken all along, in which case the chicken is very old and therefore not as able to cross the road as it used to. If the chicken's are indeed all different ones then the phrase Why did THE chicken (not in plural) cross the road, is grammatically erroneous. Who knows.
