Hey all Im a 20 year old winemaking student in Ontario and have just downloaded ALL the paperwork to fill in to apply for a temporary work visa. I have to do a 4 month placement for school but I'd like to go 2 months early to make some extra money. The placement can be anywhere in the world really as long as they grow grapes to (at least attempt) make wine. I want to go to NZ because its similar to Canadian grape growing in some respects and it is similar to the portuguses Island my family is from, in other respects. Plus from what ive seen the landscapes are out of this world. I hear its easier for under 30's to get temporary work visas, all this paperwork is intense, you certainly try to weed out the freeloaders! Anyways with any luck I will be there may/june-december. Any idea on what the spearfishing is like in Northern NZ? Toodles -AU
Good luck with the visa. I know our immigration is really hardcore... As to the spear fishing... I wouldn't have a damn clue.
Its a no go for now, NZ is a tricky place to arrange as your grape harvest season is pretty much opposite to ours so if I were to be in NZ I would be missing class. I do plan to go there to work sometime after I graduate as there is much money to be made if I can work the grape harvest here in Canada and then go work a grape harvest in the other hemisphere. Government of Canada also has a program where they pay for the ticket and give $500 a month to work overseas in some sort of student exchange. With regards to the spearfishing, I know theres fish in those waters, the trick will be to find someone local who is knowledgeable about the tides and things to watch out for. Im landlocked here in Canada, if you guys are in NZ you should try it out. Spearfishing is about the most exciting thing Ive ever experianced. Plus you get fresh free fish.
I don't think the 2 months early will be a problem... I think that's actually the window for non-visa tourism if I'm not mistaken. Other than that, you're under 30, you're a student, and you may have a listed "needs" profession. Those are all things working to your advantage. Outside of some pain in the ass paperwork , you should have no problem. Not that it's hard among the Kiwis, but make some good friends over there. Good friends = sponsorship if you should ever think about staying permanently. Also... if you're in Queenstown, SAVE YOUR MONEY FOR NEVIS... don't waste it on the bridge!
