Well, if I win the lottery, I'm definitely going to buy my own island. :indian_br I'm absolutely sick and tired of the government telling me what I can do and when I can do it, etc., etc..

However, the Scandanavian countries do have some attraction. I definitely think Canada would be a better place to live than the US-also, in this hemisphere, Uruguay has some attraction-it's a pretty developed and advanced country with few major social problems, and a pretty stable place. The island still gets my first vote, though....:beatnik2:

You don't need a shitload of money to buy an Island. You can find them off the coast of BC for $50,000

Do the provincial or federal governments have any jurisdiction over those islands, or do they pretty much leave the people alone that are on them?

Well yeah, they're part of BC, so the government has jurisdiction. Are you likely to be bothered? No.

that suprises me about Uruguay! Don't here much about them and I consider myself reasonably informed! what are the social problems you mention?

That's the whole point! The country has very few significant social problems. That's why you hear so little about the place. No wars, revolutions, or social upheaval. And the country is really pretty prosperous, compared to other Latin American countries. It used to have universal health insurance (the only Latin American country to have it), but economic situations forced them to reduce some of the benefits. They just elected a Socialist president last year, so they may get them back.

Yea, I just went to the main Uruguayan news site to see what's going on there, and it's like what news? That's the way it usually is there. No news is good news anyway, in my not very humble opinion....:smartass:

Ukraine, Netherlands, Italy, Spain. Used to really like Canada, but it seems too much like the US these days. Ukraine because I can speak the language and my wife is from there, Netherlands because of the very liberal laws and attitudes, Italy and spain because of the culture, climate and language.

I'm content where I am, but if I was going somewhere else, Switzerland, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland or Italy.

Actually, if you look at public opinion polls over the last 30 years, there is a huge difference in attitudes and outlooks from the US and the gap is actually growing, not shrinking. I wrote a paper on it last year.

I'd either stay here in this wonderful, strange, french corner of North America, move to BC, or move to Iceland or Norway or Sweden, but Northern Europe wasn't on your list.
