well you need to know about your body and when you ovulate and when you are not. some of the other posters here know a bit more about this than i do. there are books on this.

Hi Nananie. Fertility Awareness is the most accurate natural form of birth control. For that I recommend the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" By Toni Weschler, this method is entirely different than the Rhythm Method and tons of more accurate and effective.

As far as herbs there are several, but there are woman who know the dosages/recipes and effectiveness way more than I do. The herbs I remember at the top of my head are Wild Yam, Queens Anne Lace (wild carrot) seed. There are also some herbs/plants traditionally used to bring on sterility in women of varing lengths. There is a wonderful forum for this at http://www.susunweed.com/weedforum/ Many, many wise women post there and it's a wonderful community to discuss herbs and healing with other women. Another source of information is http://www.sisterzeus.com

I've learned that one of the most important things for myself is to respect myself as a fertile person, much as Jeannine Parvarti Baker discusses in Conscious Conception. I have begun to feel that any method of birth control herbal or otherwise interferes with that and feels like I am denying a sacred part of myself. Even though I am using a non-natural (yet non hormonal Birth Control, the IUD) if I were to have it removed I would most likely rely only on fertilty awareness and abstaining during that period and use that for inner reflection.

Mostly just keep in mind that no herbal method is going to be as effective as non hormonal or conventional means, and that's something you have to be willing to accept. There just isn't enough research to give statistics, just people's own experiences.

Well there are sevral herbs that will induce miscarriage in the early stages of pregnancy. You may be able to take them as a form of contraceptive but I assume they would be damaging to the body with long term usage.

The thing is...they are not 100 percent effective. After conception they work by retarding the fetus & blocking proper growth & development usually resulting in a fetus that is unable to survive and is expelled by the body. This will also create a disabled fetus who will be born a disabled baby should a miscarriage not properly occur. When using these organic methods you must be 100 percent ready to fallow through with a medical/surgical abortion should the method fail. The herbs do not always 100 percent ensure miscarriage/abortion....but they will guarintee a severly disabled baby....so unless you are emotionally ready to go through a surgical/medical abortion OR care for a severly disabled human for the remainder of his/your lifetime I wouldn't reccoment it. You should do your own research. You will find information on the net & in some books. I have also herd that some massage & trigger point therapy in certian areas of the body will cause miscarriage but I am not sure if that is legal or ethicle in any body work field/practise.

Hi, Mlynn, although you are definately correct on the information regarding herbal abortificants, there are herbs usually only used as contraception or emergency contraception (used such as when you have sex during fertile periods when you practice fertility awareness and now you're fertile). Queen Ann's Lace and Wild Yam are both used as contraception rather than abortificants, although I am not sure but it could possibly be used as both with a change in dosage or tincture amount.
