should this term replace "black"? Personally, I think its pretty dumb. To start with, its innacurate - very few black americans are actually from Africa. You say their ancestors are from Africa? Well so are mine, and I'm white, since everyone's ancestors came from that continent. And what of the many white people who were born in Africa and moved to the states? Are they not African American? And what do we call blacks from Jamaica? Jamaicans? Well that's their nationality, not their ethnicity. Same with all the other blacks who come from dark countries that are not in Africa. But what bothers me most about the term is that it is so politically correct. You will almost never hear a news anchor say "black" anymore. It's horrible. It's seven freekin syllables for crying out loud. Talk about cumbersome. Is "black" offensive? Hell no! Its what they are. I am white, call me that, not "European American"! And not caucasion either, which is just white in another language. It makes me squirm when I hear perfectly reasonable people using this seven syllable monstrosity just so they don't get called rascist or whatever. But at the same time it gives me great glee to confidently use the term "black", with strength, confidence, and a subtle slap in the face to that jerk who is too PC to scream "BLACK" with so much gusto. phew. i'm done.
i've never met a black person... different shades of brown or tan but not a black one... i think african or african american is cool... black is cool too i think the bigger issue is whites are actually more of an orangish pink so caucasians should be called orangish pinkoes
What white people don't understand is it's not about the label - it's about whose doing the labeling. For far too long we accepted what others chose to call us - but no more We choose to call ourselves african americans. Hotwater
Dude, us white folks should totally start calling ourselves European Americans. er, European Canadians? Kidding, kidding. Natives and Foreigners maybe for Canuckia? ok, I'll stop playing. (^^^ was meant to totally be light-hearted and inoffensive, just goofing off and sleep deprived, whee) Honestly, it's not gonna kill you to say African American instead of black. If people find that less offensive and it requires so little effort to say it vs black, why the hell not?
that's not what life is abotu you dumbass there are other people in this world, deal with it. I'm going to make my own language, and get offended by those that do not conform to it fuck you
cause people should learn the concept of other people. there are other people in this world, and they want to do what they want to do in extreme situations, when they are actually harming or endangering other people, they should get in trouble for this, otherwise, leave them the fuck alone
Exactly. So why are you getting into a tizzy over two words vs one word? Why can't you realize that there are other people who may feel hurt by one word, and not by the two word choice. Why can't you realize that those other people would feel x much better if you spoke a few extra syllables, threw in a few more letters.
ahaha I think I just realized what pisses me off abotu this stuff so much I've always been a big fan of MLKjr, like to the point of when I was in Memphis when I was 8, I chose the MLKjr museum as a higher priority than the Hard Rock Cafe I don't like discrimination, feel how you feel about someone, but give them a fair chance that's why I switched form athiest to agnostic, it's just not fair to rule out everyone else's beliefs like that and I see this as such a twisted backwards step whites used to be glorified, and now blacks are being glorified instead, and our laws are giving an unfair edge to all minorities as far as allowing colleges for minorities and scholarships for them and extra (many times undeserved) career oppurtunities for them there is a huge difference I must admit: the whites did it with much more force but when you factor in the deflation of brutality (or pussification ) of Western Society, and focus in on the concept, it's the same thing really and even if it isn't anywhere near as bad, it's still not good, it's definently not the direction we should be headed
I agree the shoe is now on the other foot, but they're not the pair of Bruno Magli's that you make them out to be. Hotwater
either way, it's unacceptable noone should get treated like shit, especially over something so stupid
It used to be Negro. Then it was Colored. Then Black. Then Afro-American. Then African-American. The term changes every ten years. 'Minority' is now a politically incorrect term. 'Under-represented group' is what is used now. That term will be politically incorrect in a few years and some other label will become popular. .
It's a load of fricking crap to call yourselves /them African Americans!! They were not born in Africa, and therefore cannot claim that nationality!! It's like me calling myself an English African, cos England is where my ancestors come from. Pathetic! Made us all want to puke when Whitney Houston came here, kissed the ground or whatever such crap and claimed to be 'home' ! Laughable!!!
If your American it doesn't matter where your ancestors are from, your still American. All these labels piss me off. African-American, Mexican-American, Japanese-American, Whatever-American are all just labels that were made for us to segregate ourselvess from eachother. I'm American. Nothing more, nothing less.
