Hey this is my first post on your wonderful forum and I really need some help dudes. My life is seriously gone down-hill and I have looked through hippie philosophy. I have no idea what to do though. So many questions are swirling in my head, I need answers! I am a liberal 13 year old guy and have tons of questions, fingers ready to type? 1.How much persecution will I meet in a school with 0 hippies? 2.My family is Catholic and this is my last "required year" I have to follow that path and I am looking into either Agnosticism or Budhism. Any information on this will be great. 3.I dont believe in drug-use because I think it will just slow-down change but I think it should be legalized. What are your opinions on this? 4.What is the Hippie "dress" and where can I obtain the clothing? 5.How can I help the community grow? I have good writing skills and am on the schools creatice writing team and have time on my hands 6.How about sports? I enjoy sports but I understand what's wrong with them. Are there any non-competitive sports any of you are into? 7.Is vegetarianism required? 8.Also give me any advice you think a new hippie could use in an anti-hippie community. Thanks guys and gals!
1.depends on the people as a whole 2.borders has a whole book case on buddism. Agnosticism just means you belive in after life but it is undefined. 3.I'm cool with certain drugs(hav'nt done anything in almost a year though) 4.there is no such thing and don't try. If you try you're kinda depleting the point. 5.volunter 6.if you like to play sports play them. Just becuse some dude with long hair and tye-dye shirt says it's bad does'nt mean shit. If you enjoy it, do it(as long as it's not hurting someone, and I don't mean tackling and all that) if you enjoy playing sports play them. 7.no. if you find nothing wrong with eating meat then do so. 8.just don't lose who you are threw bullshit. and don't try to be hippie just because you think it's cool. Just be what you naturally are. infact hippies don't even exsit.
^^ i second that, dont just be a "hippie" for the label, just be your nature-loving self and everything will be cool, man.
Er, no, that's not really agnoticism. There's no hard set absolute definition, most agnostics have their own take on it. But core to it is a sense that something nabout the universe is ultimately unknowable (gnostic, knowledge...) anyways... just be you. Whatevs. Being true to yourself rather than someone else's definition of "hippiedom" will make you a shitload happier.
Self appointed judges judge..................more than brave soul? I have no idea what he says there. I love sing alongs. BUT GETTING BACK TO THE SUBJECT AT HAND... Kid, you're making yourself sound like a twat. And I'm sure you're not. Just be who you are. Don't focus on stereotypes and whatnot because then you'll just turn into a carbon copy of the people before you. And the kids at your school aren't stupid either, they can tell when people are being geniune and real, instead of trying to mold themselves into something they're not. So just do what you do, regardless if a "hippie" would do it or not.
some maybe..but who cares..also some might just think your cool..but like i said who cares theres forums here for both, and many more.. slow down change? nah some can cause change overnight my opinion on this though is, weeds perfectly fine...psychodelics are ok for SOME people everything else..including alcahol is bad news anything at all..or nothing..whatever u choose.. its all about personal choice writtings allways good, just write about your adventures and share em with others i like soaring, (flying gliders/sailplanes) or frisby golf capierro (spelling?) is cool too, theres alotta options theres no requirements but being yourself however, being veg is healthier for yourself..and the planet, so is worth looking into..if you feel its right for you just be yourself be happy be free..dont worry bout ewhat others think and just be no prob..and welcome
1.How much persecution will I meet in a school with 0 hippies? Depends on the school, on how tolerant they are of people different from themselves. Be ready to defend yourself (peacefully) and deal with a lot of hate vibes flowing your way. Its not the end of the world though, at least youll sleep better at night knowing that society hasnt completely devoured your soul. 2.My family is Catholic and this is my last "required year" I have to follow that path and I am looking into either Agnosticism or Budhism. Any information on this will be great. Im ex-agnostic and I think you should go wherever your heart tells you to. Look into different religions and I think youll be suprised how some of them reflect some theories that you already had. Thats what happened with me. Go with whatever makes you all warm and fuzzy inside, hehe. 3.I dont believe in drug-use because I think it will just slow-down change but I think it should be legalized. What are your opinions on this? Ive done my share and im done. I think drugs are okay, each to his own, and I think they should deffinately be legalized. But drugs are not a requirement for you to consider yourself a hippy. 4.What is the Hippie "dress" and where can I obtain the clothing? This is my favorite. GYPSY ROSE! They have a catalog as well as an online store. http://www.gypsyrose.com/ There are also a lot of similar places scattered about the net. Most sites have links to others so finding the style you want shouldnt be that hard, it should be fun! 5.How can I help the community grow? I have good writing skills and am on the schools creatice writing team and have time on my hands This will come in handy when you want to express your thoughts or feelings to someone, and you may want to create a journal on the site that others can read. Some of them are very inspiring. 6.How about sports? I enjoy sports but I understand what's wrong with them. Are there any non-competitive sports any of you are into? Whats wrong with sports? I ride horses, i guess thats considered a sport. I used to ride competitively but i dont anymore, now its just for fun. 7.Is vegetarianism required? No, but some of the reasons behind vegetarianism may be part of the hip philosophy. Look into it. Hope i was some help.
First, a quote: "Labels are for wine bottles." -- Christo 1.How much persecution will I meet in a school with 0 hippies? Depends on how obvious or provacative you are and the culture of your school. I blended in with the "freaks" predominately metal heads, because being a counterpoint to the preppy/ jock/ roper sorts was rather unifying... and that was the mid 80s. I was in action and phrasing very much the couterculture sort, but I developed a certain understanding of the alienation in metal culture, and some appreciation for a handful of the musicians. That and it was the druggie pack, and they accepted psychonauts. Didn't get it, but accepted it. X was legal. good times. 2.My family is Catholic and this is my last "required year" I have to follow that path and I am looking into either Agnosticism or Budhism. Any information on this will be great. What info? www.beliefnet.org is a great starting point. info on coming out as a former/ recovering catholic? well, my Rabbi has a saying for kids who think they want to be something else: learn all you can about your own backyard first. that said, Buddhism can be argued to simply be a behaviour and philosophy system that can mesh with the practice of another faith, such as Jew-Bu. Also, often finding where you disagree with your current teachings will allow you to seek your answers, even if you stay in the faith or a wing of it. Look into various secular philosophies, too. 3.I dont believe in drug-use because I think it will just slow-down change but I think it should be legalized. What are your opinions on this? I never advocate use or abuse in generalization, but I believe that there are many ways to understanding, and psychedelics serve as something of a kick in the head for some people. As for legalization, I hold that to constitutionally allow freedom of speech implies freedom of thought, and to keep mind and consciousness expanding compounds illicit, and worse, unstudied, is a violation of the common law the constitution is based upon. see www.cognitiveliberty.org and www.erowid.org 4.What is the Hippie "dress" and where can I obtain the clothing? talk to the sisters in Fashion & crafts for orders or how to adapt your own. remember what a subculture's clothing is about: identifying to other members of the "tribe." When I'm in my work clothes, I find that people act and react differently to me in early meetings, than when my freak flag is flying. I certainly hav edifferent projections in tiedye than in all black. Fun game. you should try it. 5.How can I help the community grow? I have good writing skills and am on the schools creative writing team and have time on my hands find a cause. "hippie" as a master community is almost a misnomer, more of a catch-all. Does the school have a paper? submit letters to the editor or guest editorials. Pick up some journalism skills and cover issues, remembering to focus on people: how will rule X affect student Y? Even writing features on students who are a bit different can help make the overculture more aware that not every kid wants to go to the mall. Consider a small paper of your own (if distributing at school, make sure you follow admin guidelines so they cannot just collect them and trash them). 6.How about sports? I enjoy sports but I understand what's wrong with them. Are there any non-competitive sports any of you are into? nothing wrong with friendly competition. better is competition against a clock or your own previous personal best. Cross country track, skiing, even wrestling is fine. There's always hiking and other solitary/ small group pursuits. 7.Is vegetarianism required? an understanding and appreciation is needed, really, if you are in a "hippie" community of any size, because it is common. More importantly, you should have a basic understanding of the issues that bring people to vegatarianism, from spiritual paths to animal rights/ human limits (both philosphical) to health and environmental concerns. 8.Also give me any advice you think a new hippie could use in an anti-hippie community. How do you know the community is ANTI hippie, rather than doesn't have any and picks on a stereotype? Usually if there are only a few hippie freaks running around, it's OK. Steamboat Springs, the town clostest to last summers Rainbow Gathering, is usually cool about hippies since dreaddies and such are the basic block of a ski town economy. But bring in an expected "invasion" of 20 K and you get people arrested for taking food from dumpsters, food destined for a pig farm. Usually, if you are just you, have a sense of humor about the digs tossed your way, you will be realatively unscathed. Crusaders get more grief. And NEVER argue with a Nazi Skinhead twice your size with his name tattoed on his forehead when you are wearing a Star of David. Really. It's painful and bad. They do beat up girls with glasses...and think they did a good thing.
Being yourself is much more hippie-like than going like 'oh now that I am a hippie I HAVE to do all drugs I can get my hands on, walk barefeet, listen to 60s music exclusively, never touch meat again and sleep in the park'. That is kind of sad (much like having your own name tattooed on your forehead...*). Forge your own definition instead of conforming to the stereotypical definitions of others. *) though I have smoked with this chick who was so kind to show me the celtic cross and '100% white' tattooed just above her pussy. :/
You might not get anything new from this, but I like to fill out questionares sometimes. Now is one of those times. 1.How much persecution will I meet in a school with 0 hippies? I pesronally get kind of a lot. I don't know exactly what you mean by persecution and am feeling too lazy to look it up, but generally kids just call me a hippie and I either igore them or tell them to fuck off. But my school is very small so there really aren't enough people for me to blend in with. I don't know, truth is ignoring it is both the hardest and best way to handle any "persecution" (but don't be afraid to defend yourself or we'll all look like wusses :jester: ) 2.My family is Catholic and this is my last "required year" I have to follow that path and I am looking into either Agnosticism or Budhism. Any information on this will be great. I've been into budhism, it's relaxing and interesting. Check out some books on it or the forums. 3.I dont believe in drug-use because I think it will just slow-down change but I think it should be legalized. What are your opinions on this? That's cool. I think they should be legal, too. I don't think they slows down change though. 4.What is the Hippie "dress" and where can I obtain the clothing? The "hippie dress" is whatever the hell you want to wear. Personally I avoid corperate logos and shop at thrift stores for the most part or get "hand-me-downs" or whatever. Whatever's comfy, there's no dress code. 5.How can I help the community grow? I have good writing skills and am on the schools creatice writing team and have time on my hands Volenteer, or do something at your school. I started a petition for kids to be allowed to wear hats in school, it got shot down, but it was something. Just find something you don't like about the community and do whatever you can to change it, this is also a great way to make friends. 6.How about sports? I enjoy sports but I understand what's wrong with them. Are there any non-competitive sports any of you are into? I'm going to sound so stereotype when I say this but; hacky-sac, it's addicting and fun, you can play alone, or with friends, or with people you don't know. Rock climbing, most types of boarding, and I'm not sure if sailing is a sport, but it's wicked fun. 7.Is vegetarianism required? No requirements, if you don't want to eat animals, don't, if you do, then go for it. 8.Also give me any advice you think a new hippie could use in an anti-hippie community. Just don't let the bastards grind you down. Don't let them think that you're not good the way you are, and don't let them push you into some stereotype you know you aren't. Be open minded, but question what you hear. Umm...just be yourself and all that other Hallmark shit. Good luck.
I'll give you a hint - just because they wore it, listened to it, smoked it, or believed it in the 60s doesn't make it correct or cool.
Lotsa good points there, but I had to wonder... that happened to you? My dad used to work with someone in the Aryan brotherhood, at his job. He told me all the guy ever did was crack jokes about black guys and work out whenever he wasn't working (he actually brought freeweights to work...) I called this guy a skinhead this week. Can't help that I had a slight wake and bake before I took off that morning... and he appeared to look like one, because he had his hair cut really short this week. The guy always makes fun of muslims and all and the whole deal in Iraq. Alot of people were pissed at him because he dressed up as a muslim on Halloween and was acting like... well, a bit of an ignoramus. One guy went so far as knocking him down as he was leaving, because his brother died in Iraq. Haw... oh well, what comes around goes around, I guess. Leave it up to others.
