Gregory Maguire writes fictional books based on villans from other classic fairy tales. . and he does it in such an interesting, adult, depressing way that it makes me pine for more LOL. I just finished "Wicked" this month, and I have to say it was one of the best books I've read in a long time. Maguire gave not only a name to the Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba Gulch). . but he also gave her one of the most heartbreaking stories in recent memory. The thing that struck me about this book was that it was a sociological study on what causes evil behavior in people. There's even a wonderful scene at the end of the book when Elphaba, who's running from the law enforcement of Oz, sits at a dinner party and discusses "wicked' behavior with a group of people whose actions would be considered much more evil by typical standards than Elphaba's. . . yet unfortunately Elphaba becomes the scapegoat for their evil doings, through very little fault of her own. Overall, I just thought it was extremely intelligent, thought-provoking, and well-written. I'm currently reading "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman.. but as soon as I finish it, I'm starting Maguire's "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister" . . I just got it in the mail today! Do any of you like Maguire's books? Sm**chies! Jacob.
Wicked and Son of a witch were too very interesting novels. I read both in two days devouring ever word. I have confessions, but have yet to read it. Will hopefully get to it so soon as i finish Anne Rice's Jesus out of egypt.
