Can anyone tell me who or what this verse is reffering to?

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
    And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Jesus Christ, of course...but what's your point?

If you're inferring that that Christ will return and govern the world, also remember..."My kingdom is not of this world."

It is so awesome how people will always say that this ONE verse is Jesus Christ. This verse was written by Isaiah 700 years before Christ even walked the earth. But what is crazy is that if I were to tell people 300 of these same type of prophecies and tell them that they were messianic prophecies they would cry out: "These prophecies are TOO VAGUE!"

I just answered that... If I were to just come out and say there are 300 messianic prophecies that Jesus fulfilled... I would get responses saying "They are too vague!"

But you see I just wrote ONE and asked someone to tell me who it described and the first person tells me Jesus.

I thought that verse came from the one of the Gospels...shows you how much I know.

I still don't understand your purpose in starting this thread.

Isaiah wrote that verse 700 years before Jesus came to the earth. There are about 300+ verses like that called the messianic prophecies and they are scattered throughout the OT. If you do a yahoo search you can see them all.

In general, when I talk about these prophecies most people will pass them away as to vague... or anyone could have fulfilled them even after I gave them 300 prophecies that clearly point to Jesus!

In this post, I just wrote done ONE without any background knowledge and asked the question, "Who does this describe?"

And just with ONE of these messianic prophecies that were written well before Jesus. Someone was able to give me a clear answer, "Jesus, of course"

But as soon as the secret was out that that verse was a messianic prophecy about Jesus I got answers such as "jah rastafari" and "barack obama"

Now they may be half joking, but the other half is trying to steer away from who the verse is actually about--JESUS.

Sounds like someone who hopes his son will one day be president huh?
As were all roman and Egyptian emperors.
They were also called protector of men and
    leader of faith

You know you would have answered JESUS if you did not have any background knowledge of the verse... You would have answered JESUS just as Sanatan did.

    "Jesus of course"

Actually, Isaiah speaks/writes in reference to the ideal future (and the ideal person who would lead all humanity to/in the ideal future), where all beings live together creatively and harmoniously in an environment of universal benevolence (physical, political, social, intellectual, spiritual, etc.).

The debate hinges on the question of whether or not that person is Jesus, and we're all waiting for everyone to live up to his inspiration, or whether that person is the Moshiach of an ideal future that is, obviously, yet to be fully realized.

Of course, both could be true. Who knows?

    Peace and Love

I am waiting for the one they call Brian.
His films are far better than Jesuses films and they actually promote a much better understanding of how the world works

    My $.02 worth:

and the government will be on his shoulders...yeah, that's one way to interpret this...as a poetic reference to his death at the hands of Roman authority. That seems out of context with the verse, though...the remainder of the verse speaks of the person to who it is referring in very exalted terms, making it all appear to indicate that he will be a Godly ruler or governor.

In all fairness, the complete quote is so full of familiar buzz-phrases about Jesus that anyone, believer or nonbeliever, with a Christian background and minimal knowledge of the Bible could guess who it's about; even persons completely uncoversant with Christianity hear a lot of these phrases repeated during the Christmas season...I merely answered you first.
