Hey crafty folks! i recently picked up a corduroy winter coat at the goodwill. It's quilted inside, dark brown cord, button down. It's cozy warm, but a bit boring. i looking for some ideas for embellishing it. i was thinking about putting an applique on the back, but wanted to hear what other suggestions are out there. Anyone have a good source for artys buttons? The buttons could definitely be improved, they are just boring brown plastic. Any idea welcome! Thanks! ~tree
Embroidery, funky old buttons and brooches, patches... You could add different coloured/textured detail on the cuffs/hem/hood(if there's one), as in, sewing on some other materials overtop. You could also do some beadwork on it, maybe do a few rows between the ribbing in the cordouroy or something. The applique sounds good too. I've done that to a couple coats before and it worked out nicely.
i got a denim jacket from my sell-it-again shop, and i embroidered "the beatles" on the arm, a peace sighn on the pocket, and i sewed on a "rock and roll hall of fame" patch on the breast and a dragonfly patch on the shoulder. im still adding on as i go tho, im farrrr from finished =) my plan is to not treat it as a "gotta finish it fast" project, im just gonna add as i go, kind of like a "wearable scrapbook". another thing you could do is paint it with fabric paint, or reglar paint with textile medium added into it.
you could try making some buttons out of fimo, or you could take small peace badges and pin them where the buttons go.
patches are always an ideal embelishment, and probably the easiest to do. hm... don't know what to recommend beyond that, but everyone's seem to have good ideas...
