Anyone hiked the appalachian trail or part of it? I guess theirs other wilderness trails too. The Pacific something trail that runs from the Canadian border all the way down to the bottom of Cali. One that runs all around Florida and another that runs through Colorado down to New Mexico. Just curious to hear if anyones done any hardcore backpacking like that before.
There is the Appalachian, of course (AT). The Pacific Crest Trail runs from Canada to Mexico along the Pacific Coast (PCT). The Florida Trail runs from Key West to Talahassee (I think). The one from Colorado to New Mexico is the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) And the new trail starts at Cape Henlopen, Deleware and ends at the Pacific Ocean north of San Francisco. It's called the American Discovery Trail (ADT), is 6,800 miles long through 15 states and it has been thru-hiked by several dozen people already. IMO, one of the best trails in the US is the John Muir Trail. It's only about 200 miles long but it ends on Mt Whitney, the highest point in the lower 48 states, and crosses some 10,000' + peaks.
I've only done one of the three major Trails (Appalachian Trail. I hiked it in '98 and was given the "trailname" BooBoo hence my screenname. Each year approx 3000 people attempt to hike the AT but only approx. 500 will finish. The Continental Divide Trail (CDT) Runs from New Mexico to the Canadian Border. The hiking community is full of some of the most wonderful(and sometimes craziest) folks you've ever met. Come check out www.whiteblaze.net to meet and talk to tons of other hikers. Many of the folks on here are old friends of mine. for great deasl on gear www.campmore.com
Thanks for clarifying the trails guys. Id just kinda heard of em before and have recently taken an interest. Sounds like both of you got some experience under your belts. Ive done a week in New Mex but nothing like this. I just think doing something like that would be a great spiritual, puryfying sort of experience and a good step towards self discovery. If I do get around to takin the trip I think Id prolly do it solo for that reason. Just been cooped up in the city for too long and need an adventure I guess. I suppose gettin my ass to the library for some research would be a good idea. Any recomended readings on the subject?
Jan D. Curran (though it's a little dated) and there are about 500,000 listings on the web. I like Ray Jardine, but that's just me.
