I was wondering if any of you listen to actual ambient music (ie Eno's Music for Airports, Discreet Music, Fripp's Frippertronics, etc) or just the modern trance stuff people call ambient now. Don't take this to mean that I don't enjoy some of what's around these days, I just don't consider it ambient, really.
I'm a long time fan of Eno. But it does sound a little dated nowadays - more in common with some modern classical than electronic in some ways. Myself, I prefer the 'downtempo' label to 'ambient' as a way of categorizing it all.
I love the stuff...started listening to it around the very early 90s (what I consider to be the golden era of ambient...but it's admittadly my own bias); before that it was new age 'cause I had no idea about Tangerine Dream, Eno, etc. btw, you gotta check out my massive ambient megamix...it's in another thread. and oh yes, there is definetely a delineation betwixt ambient and ambient dub.
