Three friends go to get a motel room for the night and split the cost 3 ways for a room to share. They ask the Desk Clerk how much a room would be for the night to which he replies $30.00. So they each give the clerk $10.00 and they go up to their room. The Desk Clerk then realizes he made a mistake - the room is actually only $25.00. So he gives the Bellhop $5.00 and tells him to give it back to the 3 guests. The Bellhop goes to the room and explains that they were overcharged. So the 3 each take $1.00 back, and being generous they let the Bellhop keep the other $2.00. So by getting a dollar back each of the 3 friends now only paid $9.00 for the room, and the Bellhop kept the other $2.00. But 9 X 3 = 27 + 2 = 29... what happened to the other $1.00?
3x9= 27 (for a room of 25$ but this includes Bellhop's tip) so it's not 27+2 but it's 27+3= 30 :sunglasse
Well done! Of course the math works out and there is obviously no "extra" dollar. So the "trick" is the riddle simply has you add +$2 to (supposedly) arrive at $30 where instead you really should be -$2 to arrive at $25. There is no 27 +2 in the story! The only place a 2 could be used an equation would be: 27 - 2 = 25 ~Seven
