All right, I've wanted to ask this for a long time, and no doubt it'll be a no-brainer for many well-pierced or knowledgable people regarding the piercing subject. I've always toyed with the idea of nipple and cheekbone piercings but because I travel a lot by plane, this can pose problems. Are there alternative materials to put in my holes or do I have to hide behind the conveyor belt while I remove my nipple/cheek/clit piercings? Are there any ways to get past this or do I have to blow a hot air balloon to get to SEA from N. America? What does one do? Is there no other alternative than removing them all? I have seen wooden and plastic jewelry but I still like the durability of metal. Any solutions to this connundrum?
I have never set off a metal detector. I've got 2 stainless steel plates and 16 steel screws in my ankle, 2 nipple piercings, clit hood, tongue, nostril, navel and a heap of ear piercings. All are filled with metal. I'm always a little dissappointed that I don't set them off...I've got enough metal in my freakin body!!!! I think if you did set off the metal detector, they would just wand you. I can't imagine every pierced person who flies is removing their jewelry every time. If you want to play it safe, you can find glass retainers for pretty much any piercing. Glasswear studios is my favorite glass shop. You could use acrylic, but I'm not a fan. Onetribe makes great organics and Kaos makes silicone plugs.
Hey thanks, Stormyy! As you can tell I'm not much of a piercing person right now. I have traditional ear piercings (8 in total) and only wear earrings in the lobes (fancy girl ones) so I remove them every time.
I don't know how that works, but it does. Sometimes it goes off for like, something stupid like a belt buckle. It's never gone off while I was walking through, and I've had metal in me for years. I honestly am completely clueless why piercings don't set those things off. I wouldn't worry at all about your earrings. Like Stormyy said, they'll just wand you. I don't think they'd assume you have a bomb in your ear.
lol good question i dunno piercings just don't set off he buzzor, well i've never been on a plane so i couldn't tell you but from what friends have told me it hasn't gone off on them so far.
Thanks everyone. I appreciate the responses. I will now go punch more holes. Though I must say rereading, that I'm not quite sure what "glass retainers" are.
Glass retainers are gnerally used when someone wants to keep a piercing hidden. Like these: http://www.glasswearstudios.com/webpages/jewelry/retainers_ns.html http://www.glasswearstudios.com/webpages/jewelry/retainers_septum.html I like to wear glass in my big lobe holes. It's light, purdy and hypoallergenic.
I have 7 piercings, I travel quite a lot by plane and have never set off a metal detector. However, a friend of mine has a PA piercing and it seems to set off the metal detector everytime. Luckily this friend of mine has no shame, he just thinks it's funny. But I can just imagine the faces of the poor customs people when they discover it.
