...because 10 is never enough. TV On The Radio - Cookie Mountain -arty: If these dudes started a Post-Rock band. arty: Subtle - For Hero: For Fool -If Bobby Brown raped everyone in Radiohead in a crack frenzy, this would be the offspring. Joanna Newsom - Ys -Beautifully orchestrated folk music with even more stirring lyrics. You'll Love it or Hate it. Liars - Drums Not Dead -Primal and precise all at once. A concept album of inspiration versus self-doubt. Another "Love or Hate" album. Islands - Return To The Sea -Majority of The Unicorns form a Psych-Pop band in the vein of The Shins, The Boy Least Likely To, and Jimmy Buffet. Mastodon - Blood Mountain -Soundtrack to the Battle of Megiddo. Not usually a metal fan, but there's no denying Blood Mountain's genius. Mew - And The Glass Handed Kites -Visceral Space Rock. The Cocteau Twins would be proud. Girl Talk - Night Ripper -If there is anything good about mainstream hip-hop, Girl Talk has syphoned the best of it into this mash-up record. Could also be one of the most influential CDs of the year, if not, easily the most fun. Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies -So you've probably heard this playing in every hipster coffeeshop in town. Don't let that discourage you, there's something truly captivating here. The Thermals - The Body The Blood The Machine -Yea, it's angst and power-chords. Yea, it's cliched. But it's raw and poignant enough to transcend that. Yea, that sounds pretentious and stupid. Listen to it anyway, and tell me I'm wrong. The Blow - Paper Television -Favorite Pure Pop Act of '06. Sickeningly Catchy. Good year. Can't wait for '07 (radiohead).
6 - Summoning - Oath bound Majestic as ever... 5 - Matisyahu - Youth I'm not a big reggae fan but the title track blew me away like an Israeli missile aimed at a Palestine elementary school. Powerful stuff! 4 - Xavier Rudd - Food in the belly A pleasant package of positive vibes in the shape of a folk/reggae/aboriginal/surf one-man band. Positively blissful live! 3 - Ohtar - Petrified breath of hope Great intelligent, atmospheric (NS)BM. A real gem. 2 - Lurker of Chalice - Lurker of chalice Side project of the mastermind behind Leviathan, this owns his main band ten times over. Hypnotic, unsettling and murderous. 1 - My Dying Bride - A line of deathless kings The kings of doom metal reclaim their thrones. Sadly, the newest Ancient Rites, Darkthrone, Satyricon, Carpathian Forest, Gorgoroth and Dissection did not leave much of an impression. Maybe due to comparison with previous, better efforts.

I’m terrible bad at remembering the years of release and I probably didn’t checked all albums from 2006 out yet, but these are my favourites from 2006 I can come up with for now: -Asteroid/Blowback – Split EP: superb rock! -Dead Man – Dead man: psych/folk rock -Spaceship Landing – Spaceship landing: heavy space rock -Siena Root – Kaleidoscope: Modern classic rock? Check their myspacesite out! - Witch - Witch: Fantastic heavy stoner rock with female vocalist Uh, I don’t know more 2006 releases for now that really blew me away, but the 5 above sure did! I’ve checked out the new Summoning, but I didn’t like Oath bound at all. May be it needs a few listens though, but it seems it’s not as good as Stronghold or even Let mortal heroes sing your fame.
Those sure sound nice judging from your description. Summoning in my opinion are rather consistent in turning up with great albums, and Oath bound actually was one that did NOT require multiple listens to appreciate fully. It'll probably get even better next times I hear it.
Yeah, I highly recommend Witch to you. Siena root has a female vocalist as well by the way. But you're saying you prefer Oathbound above Stronghold?
I'm not sure. Stronghold probably isn't my favourite, but with Summoning it's kinda hard to try and put the albums in order of appreciation. Their albums just don't work that way, I guess. I have one or two favourites on every record and the rest is nice but not more than that. Dead Man should be to my liking as well if it sounds like I'm imagining.
I asked my mate the very same question - albums of the year his reply below: Ok, after careful thought I have compiled shortlist. I am sure you will find some glaring errors/omissions but I think I stand by it. In no particular order: Through the Windowpane by The Guillemots. An truly eclectic mix of styles and genres with snippets of, dare I say it, lyrical genius. This is music for the 21st century. Sam's Town by The Killers. To be honest, I knew I would love this album before I even heard it. The first single set an exciting precedent for what was to follow. Very much an American album with more than a nod of the head towards Springsteen, obviously, but in my book that's no bad thing. Anthemic and brilliant. We Shall Overcome by Bruce Springsteen. An album I never, ever thought I would like, let alone adore. It is so very different from anything else that has come out this year and marks an artist at the peak of his artistic expression doing something he clearly loves doing. He had great fun recording this album and I have great fun listening to it. Z by My Morning Jacket - Big hair, big beards, big noise but also some stunningly beautiful quiet moments. Perhaps a little self indulgent but so what? Sometimes self indulgence is a great thing (unless it is Chris Martin). If seventies rock had a bastard live child it would sound a lot like this. Victory for the Comic Muse by The Divine Comedy. It is funny, it is witty and musically excellent. Hannon has been doing this a long time with little recognition and maybe that has allowed him more room for expression. Pander to the masses, he does not. Echoes of Ray Davies abound, both in tunes and more so in the lyrics and sounding like the Kinks is no bad thing at all. How's that to be getting on with? My Reply Well. Guillemots is inoffensive and fairly toe tappin. As I said I was determined not to like this album (The Killers) but having listened to it its alright. When you were young is pretty good. Bones not so much. And theres a range between the two, like the last album before it was massacred by heavy rotation, its ok but half of it is just annoying. I haven't listened to the Boss' new opus so can't really comment but as you pount out, itll be shit unless you actually listen to it. ah pre-judgement, guilty untiul proved innocent, the nme approach to music rating. MMJ -Z I recommended this to you! Similar to the Boss, Div Comed I can't but imagine this is going to be rubbish as they've embraced the slippery slope into mediocrity, I say they I mean Neil Hannon. Can one forgive a band for latter day sins / mediocrity or course one flippin can when a band has written such tunes. ''Its hard to get by when your arse is the size of a small country'' Genius. And then my choices to him: I'll volunteer as albums for the year - The Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control Midlake - The Trials of Van Occupanther Howling Bells - Howling Bells CSS - Cansei De Ser Sexy Tapes 'n' Tapes - The Loon And Singles of The Year Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Cheated Hearts The Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control Los Campesinos! - YouMeDancing The Rapture - Get Myself In To It She Wants Revenge - Tear You Apart Who do you think is the more correct?
I have no idea, man. Well, I'm not sure If I described it completely right, but check out their song Highway on their myspace site. One of my favs. If you like that one you should check their album out.

I second the Joanna Newsom. It's an amazing album. And I can't quite decide whether I love TV on the Radio or hate them. I'll have to wait until their next album I guess. Other than that, I'm not sure but it would include Yo La Tengo - I'm Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass The Shins - Wincing the Night Away and The Roots - Game Theory

1 Beatles -Love 2 Neil Young -Living with war 3 Bob dylan -Modern times 4 The espers - self titled and 5 The espers -II 6 Joanna Newsom -Ys (as someone said above, you have to listen to her a bit before her voice grows on you, then you cant stop, almost like a dylan, neil young type of strange singing) 7 David Gilmour -On an island (I think that was this year)
