The family from the Bay area, that got lost in the Oregon snow on their way back from a Thanksgiving vacation...Well, the momma had limited supplies, so to make things stretch, in case they were trapped in the snow, she breastfed BOTH her baby and her 4 year old, something that formula could never ever do! Yay for emergency nursing!
YAY!!!! Not as dramatic, but once, when I beleive it was when Sunshine was a baby (although it could have been Moon or Lennon) we were at a freind's house for the evening. A huge storm blew up, feet of snow. We were going to have to stay there overnight. My hostess was freaking out, trying to get her dh to go to the store. There was enough food in the house, so I didn't know what the problem is. She said, "You are going to run out of formula, aren't you?" (She has seen me nurse, but never had herself, and thought that all babies "had" to have formula, whether breastfed or not.) I explained to her that my milk was all the baby needed and no one needed to go to the store. I don't think she beleived me until late the next day, when we dug the cars out, and the baby was still wel fed, quiet and happy. Freek, is that the couple who had the two TV specials about them? I hated the first one, with the dad (that James at 15 kid) telling the baby, who was nursing at the TIME, "When we get back I'm gonna get you the biggest bottle you ever saw in your life. A HUGE bottle, just for you." Bear had to hold me back from throwing something at the TV, turns out later, the mom said, not only did her dh never say that, but that she didn't desperately drip water into the baby's mouth, as they showed in the show. Guess what? The Show was sponsored by NESTLE! When it was redone on "I shouldn't be Alive" it was much more accurate. She did give the baby a little water, but it was more due to fear than actual need.
No, this family is still in the news! They just found the momma and babies, but the dad is still missing. He went out for help and they can't find him!
Awesome! I am amazed at the immunity that it gives children. Everyone in the house suffered a stomach flu then a week later a bad cold. I was certain that my 1 month old would catch it, and she didn't! I thank the breastmilk!
How sad this poor, brave man died. He was trying to find help for his family. He is a true hero. My prayers and thoughts are for him, and his wife and children. How terribly sad. I am glad some of the family survivied. Thank God (or Goddess or insert your deity here ) that the rest of the family lived. What a sad thing.
