they have some good songs, but i dont care for them as a band too very much. i like the album "workingmans dead" a lot, and there are some individual songs on other records that are good, but other than that i dont care one way or the other about them.

in my opinion they're highly overrated. not to say i think they're BAD....just not really that great. i can think of any number of other musicians and musical groups i'd rather listen to.

you are all wrong the Dead is the greatest band of all time!

haha, just kidding. But seriously, I thought the Dead would be getting more love than this. Comparisons to Barry Mannilow? Boring? Elevator music? I don't get it. It's like we're not listening to the same band. No energy? hardly.

the idea of self-imposed brainwashing is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. That's like being a hippy for fashion. Listening to the Dead because it's "hip" in some circles is stupid as fuck. Why waste your time? Go get your Hootie and the Blowfish CD's out and jam to what you really like. Unless Ace of Base more your thing.

    ^^
by the way, that's not directed at anyone in particular.

I only have pity for people that don't feel the Dead. Jerry does a soul good!

There really seems to ne no middle ground with the Dead. There are those of us who love them and have had their music as an influential power in their lives for years, and there are those who compare them to Barry Manilow and call threm overrated. You might as well be argueing pro-choice vrs. pro-life.

Jerry once said in an interview "The Grateful Dead are like licorice. Not everyone likes licorice, but the people who do like it REALLY like it."

I remember losing my mind at a show or two, likely drug induced, and i remember people playing me certain taped live shows over and over trying to make it stick

I think I'll choose the rest of the musical world over the grateful dead, if you like it,cool, but it is a bit floaty and boring to the rest of us

I've never listened to the Grateful Dead, Hendrix, Bob Marley, the Beatles, or anyone else famous like them. Heh heh, I usually stick to tribal, psychedelic trance, classical/neo-classical, and some other obscure genres of music.

I don't why someone would say that the Grateful Dead is overrated. Most mainstream press and critics usually ignored them, they never had any number one hits or albums. the only people that maybe overrate them are their fans, but that's probably true of any band. Equating the Dead with Barry Manilow is just plain mean and/or absurd. They were some of the most dedicated (no pun intended) musicians to their art that are/were around. I can think of few other bands and/or individuals that have creatively advanced and expanded music as much as they have, as well as keeping some of the older traditions alive. It does seem that many people either love them or hate them with little middle ground but it is just a matter of musical taste.

I like the Dead. Some of there stuff can seem really slow and depressing, and you don't notice for ten minutes then suddenly you realize you're still waiting for something really different to happen. We have the Golden Road box set thingy in my house, but the live tapes my dad's got are so much better. My favorite album is the Grateful Dead (skull and roses). Truckin' and the whole american beauty album are overrated, not bad at all, but overrated.

You are extraordinarily fortunate to have made it to age 20 unscathed by this "musical" group. When you finally do listen to them, please know that you are not alone in your dissapointment and pain. Enjoy reggae!

for me the grateful dead has the power to make me happy no matter what the circumstance. if im not having a good trip and i put on the dead, it immediatly fixes that. There songs that are considered their "greatest hits" such as truckin', and studio recorded songs, are not good representations of the dead. You have to listen to their lesser known songs that are more jammy and i find to be more meaningfull. Jerry is an amazing musiscian, i don't know what your talkin about soaring eagle...if you can't atleast see that he's very talented then i dont know how i could convince you...you dont have to like them but if u cant see the talent there then your a harsh critic and listening to alot of grateful dead would be good for you. Not only were they great musiscians but they were great people, if your not gonna love the music then love the message.

christ, dont even listen to the studio shit cuz thats what it is... shit!! u gotta download shows upon shows and listen as the imporovisational magic shoves unavoidable good vibes down your throat! the dead arent really a one song band, its more of a culture, an atmosphere, a feeling.

also man, listening to strictly bob marley and hendrix? the only more stifling thing i could think of would be listening to strictly.... the Dead!

lol, just keep an open mind man cuz the dead have a ton to offer. and so do truckloads of bands besides bob marley and jimi hendrix, genius as these men may have been...
