So, my mom is buying land somewhere in the US this summer, and I get to live on it during school breaks and when I graduate I'll live their full time. I'm thinking of starting a commune. Sure, it'll technically be my mom's land, but she's pretty cool and I think I can convince her of it. Who's with me?? Where should we move??

    So excited!!!

Uh... I actually was going to do this with a 100+ acres my family owned, but it just doesn't always work out too well.

Communes frighten me, somewhat... unless they're like... rainbow communes. I always think of the cults you hear about on Oprah.

I know, but they usually don't work out because they're too loosely organized or with no rules at all. Mine would have some kind of structure. And I'm thinking small-scale, nothing big.

I want to live in a commune within the next 5 years. I was looking around Oregon, maybe you could buy it there. I'm a bit iffy on them too though, it'll be hard to find one I can trust and enjoy.

Hmm... land is dirt cheap in the ozarks... and in areas of the Appalachians.

    shit, son, meeee too. :uhoh2:

I like how HHB (hippie hillbilly) has his place organized... it's kinda a drop-in place for folks to stay, and they just have to do a bit of manual labour to pay for their food/shelter etc. and that way, you dont have people trying to take over on ya.

but congrats on the land. :D thats wicked.

Yeah, that's the kind of thing I'm talking about. I'm totally fine with bartering, working, and hostel kinda deals... :D

But not like... some kind of socialistic religious ideals thing.

montana has the highest property taxes in the nation, though. i used to live there, it's what gets you.

Really? Damn, I was actually thinking of montana. We're still looking of course. Do you know which state has the lowest?

Don't worry, I'm definitely not taking any of this for granted. I'm still going to need a job when I graduate, until we can get the land able to generate an income. And I'd love to live outside the US, but Europe is expensive (at least Western Europe, and Eastern Europe would give us a language barrier) and I have to live somewhere where I can get medical insurance and reliable prescriptions (due to a life-long medical condition) so anywhere else doesn't seem likely. Canada may still be an option, though they have crazy taxes. It's my mom's money, so I can't be too picky. Besides, she works for the government, she'll probably sick the CIA on my ass if I try to flee. [IMG]

I would try Colorado. Cool poeple beautiful area. Cold as hell in winter though. Were I about 14 years younger and not quite so married I would be in like flynn. Sure are a bunch of cute girls into the commune idea. :)

i dont think that you can even buy land in Europe....I would try central/south america. from what I hear, land isnt that expensive...i have a few friends that own land in costa rica and panama, and another friend of mine just bought land in argentina (but she's from there..I guess that helps sometimes!)

That is what I picture when I think of the word 'commune'. I'm glad I never got stuck watching shows like Oprah when I was growing up, and was able to run around outside instead. There are hundreds of places just like that all over the country. They aren't hard to find.

Mm New Mexico is so nice. Not good for any type of farming though. Just nice mountains.

    Utah?

Well... that's the thing. I do run around outside... and just because it was on Opera doesn't mean you can't read or access it anywhere else.

I would assume Massachusetts has the highest taxes, as they have the highest fees for license plates and such. Montana is a right-leaning state, so that would be shocking if it was true.

    Nederland, Colorado.

My god, what I would give to live around those parts. I remember going through Boulder...

    Expensively amazing.

Haha.. it wasn't anything against you man. It's cool.

And dudes... there are plenty of houses off of Chester between E. 40th and E. 100 over here in Cleveland that have no property tax. I mean... to compete with the local cash crops you'd have to learn how to grow crack... but other than that it's awesome.

:D I know, I wasn't attacking you or anything if it seemed like it... I just feel that just because it was on Oprah doesn't mean it's untrue or discredible. It can be found via other sources...

I just thought I'd mention that. I saw that episode while staying with meg, so I figured she'd relate on this kinda thing, as well.

Either way, it's always better to lean towards the brighter side of communal living.
