Greenpeace is selling mercury testing kits.

you send in some hair, the lab tests it and sends you the results.
Its a decent PR campaign about mercury polution from burning coal, but my question is what should one do about the results?

If one has a high mercury level, how can one lower it? Can one lower it?

a blood or urine test for mercury will give a more accurate result.

Chelation is a treatment that removes mercury, but is not widely accepted in the medical community (iow insurance won't cover it).

why do you say that? a blood or urine test gives absolutely no indication of how much mercury has already been laid down into tissues, it only tells how much is circulating. that can be very misleading.

re chelation: there are lots of mercury detox protocols around. if i wanted to chelate, i'd only do it under the supervision of a doctor with a lot of experience.

I heard that cilantro helps to get mercury out of your system.

    right, cilantro, chlorella, blah blah

the only problem is that chelators lift the heavy metals out of the tissues, but if there isnt anything right there to bind to them immediately, they can settle down again into the brain instead of muscle or bone tissue. chelation is dangerous, it needs to be done under competent medical supervision.
