i believe we should protect the current state of the environment for the sake of the current life forms.

but people say we're destroying the Earth. are we though? surely we'd just kill of some species (inc. homo sapiens), and then the Earth would carry on. I mean there's been points in history before where people reckon lyk 80% of all species have been wiped out and before long new ones replaced the old.

No... the earth, and everything in our solar system, and inevitably; our galaxy, will be destroyed in a hell-fire, or an extreme vaccum. =/

That would have to be one strong vacume. I don't think my hoover could do the trick. :) :) :)

I don't know about the hellfire though.

I am a horti...studied horticulture and I too have confidence that somehow mother earth will survive. Man may not but will that be a great loss, after all we don't seem to care about anything but ourselves.

I think man may come to realize what life is about, and care more for other men. I think it may take some divine intervention, or maybe solid science, but we can improve our current selfish state; maybe with drugs, who knows.

saving the environment is not about the earth, we need to save the environment as it is now because we can't survive without it. offcourse the earth will eventually get another eco-system when we are gone, but the problem is that we will be gone

sure the earth will "survive," but that says nothing about the quality of life that we and other living creatures will then have to suffer through...

No, I believe in humanity's ability to destroy its planet.

It won't really matter, there's billions of planets out there that are supporting life as we speak, so really, our planet dies, big deal.

rainbow, you said it. in the end, it doesnt matter how many species we eliminate. the chinese dolphin doesn't know it's extinct, only we do. the point is that we are ruining things for ourselves. the incredible diversity of life is not only beautiful, but also essential for the discovery of new vaccines, etc. we need this place, so we should not shit in our own nest. the ecological movement is ultimately about preserving a decent quality of life for our descendents.
it's horrific to imagine what kind of hell our great-great-grandchildren might end up living in because of our greed. i'd rather that we didn't exsist than live in an empty world. eventually our species will be eliminated in the next mass extinction (meteorite, dissease, abrupt climate change) and life on earth will carry on for billions of years after we are gone. the diversity we see today is nothing compared to what has come before us and what will follow. the issue is that we spoil it for ourselves during our breif moment of consciousness.

p.s: there's no way that we could destroy the earth. if we made it our mission to eliminate every living species we would fail miserably. life is simply more adaptable than we can imagine.
    peace.
