ok last night I was thinking lets say zombies take over the uk and you have a chance to sail to a offshore island, but all you can take with you is what will fit into a average size holdall .

what would you take , its unlikely that you will be able to come back to the mainland for quiet some time ....years most likely

and you will have to live and protect yourself from zombies that may wash up , the island I was thinking of was steep holm in the bristol channel

survival on it would be rough but its not inhabited I dont think ,so it wouldnt have many zombies waiting for you, you can use other islands if you can think of them as your escape island so what would be in your holdall of doom.

remember you have to think both long and short term survival, and some possible zombie defence , the things you take must be real things that exist and you could put into your holdall

just found out there is a warden on the island otherwise uninhabited but for the sake of this dilemma you can say no warden or now zombie warden

I'd say basic survival stuff, with extra stuff to help with food or shelter. I doubt zombies would be able to get to the island even if they wanted to, unless they were intelligent zombies. Even then, if it's lust for blood that drives them, why would they go to the trouble of travelling to a small island like that if it seems deserted?

Oh yeah, I'd make sure to live on the side of the island furthest from any land, with an emergency raft hidden somewhere near the beach. That would minimise the chance of my night-time fires and stuff being seen from the mainland, and allow me the chance to escape if they did come over.

I would take a box of Jordan's Special Muesli cereal bars and a copy of the Observer. The ill-founded belief that somebody else is in charge is what makes us British...

    a camping chair.
    firelighters
    A small shovel
    Rope
    Books
    Mobile phone

I doubt that zombies would be able to get a small island that required swimming to. They don't tend to be attracted to fire, so that wouldn't be a problem. You need rope for traps and stuff, just in case there are zombies already there when you arrive. A chair for sitting on. A shovel for smacking them in the head with. Books for entertainment. A phone for checking whats going on. You could check the news and stuff if it was one of those fancy internet phones.
