Well I have finally decided to start the dreading process. A few quick questions though.

First I have decided to go all natural and avoid using wax. What is the best way to get things going, my hair is usually tangled when I wake up and I have always combed it out straight, thinking this is the socially accepted norm. No more will I do this. TIME for some all natural dreadsss !

After I shower I will probably towl dry my hair, does this get the dreads started and tangled ?

As for soap I have heard Dr. Bronner's with tea tree bar soap works great. Any ideas where I can buy this in the USA, such as; do places like Wal-Greens, Wal-Mart or local stores like Hy-Vee carry it ?

Thanks so much for any advice or tips and will keep you updated with pictures of the process, Thanks and Greetings from Iowa !

Also, here are some pictures of my current hair and length, think this will turn out well in the end? My hair is very straight, I'll take a picture tommorow when it is tangled out of the shower.

best place for dr bronners is online, at least in santa cruz and we are the hippie capital of the world it seems.

IF you want to go all natural just let your hair tangle, and rip them apartin into "dreads". Have fun and post progress pics!

All natural means, wash hair, dont rip dont do it. Only cause it makes your hair look really good at the end rip your hair when it REALLY TANGLES and starts getting really rough hard.

I know there are a few co-ops in Iowa. I don't know if you are near any of them, but I work at a co-op and we carry every single flavor of Dr. Bronner's made. Plus, we carry it in bulk, so it ends up being cheaper to buy it that way.

    As for other advice...

Keep your hair clean, wash often, play with them, and let them do their thing.

Des Moines to be more accurate. Already ordered some online, haven't received a confirm e-mail yet, but I don't think anyone in California is even awake when I am. Usually around 5 a.m. :) I have nothing better to do anyway since I am still unemployed so I am just chilling to some String Cheese Incident !

    (Thumbnails click for larger.)

The morning after, first official day of the process. I have done nothing to them except washed and towl dryed em last night. I can't wait for this Dr. Bronners tea tree soap to come ! I heard it smells overwhelmingly good.

Just bought some of this nice Dr. Bronner's soap. Smells nice and it was cheap too. I'm about ready to shower with it, making sure that I dilute it with alot of water. ALL-ONE !

Man does that soap smell tasty, just used a little, tiny bit so my hair and scalp can adjust to it. After 18 years of using normal shampoo I'm sure my hair and scalp are used to it. But, my head seems to love Dr. Bronner and his soap.Well, for going the natural method, and not doing anything these are starting to look dam good. I think my hair was ment to be like this !

I love this, people are gonna shit when I come back from winter break lookin like a cave man ! I should just walk into school barefoot and really freak em out. I feel such a natural high right now, just not caring at all. It feels weird that I have not touched a comb or brush in 2 days, I'm used to being a slave to the thing. Man I have this tingling energy going up my spine, like some kundalini yoga stuff, really nice.

Peace and love to you all for your support and kind words.

My only advice is to stay far away from dreadheadhq products. Keep us posted on how your dreads are doing.

Yeah, I have no intention of buying anything from dreadheadhq or knottyboy, the only thing going in these babies is some dr. bronners and water. If I can find some cheap wood and glass beads I might pick up some of those. I will definetly keep you posted on progress with pictures. Probably not till any real dreads form though. Thanks for the help and advice, HipForums have changed my life and dug me out of a rut I was stuck in. Peace to everyone !

Looking back at my first pictures I can see how long they have come in about 3 months. This is all from just not combing my hair and washing every other day with some Bronner's. Any comments or tips would be nice! Good to see and hear from everyone.[IMG]

    wow your hair looks AMAZING.
This is really weird, but could you take a pic of your hair in a pony tail? I am wanting to do natural dreads but with the job I have, i have to keep my hair lookin neat, but i can pull it back. I basically need to see how "neat" it would look pulled back. I'd be so appreciative if you could do that for me. thanks so much. your hair looks super!
