more atheists today

What sets me off is that people quote the Bible and use that as proof of what relgion is.

Religion does not equal the Bible.

There are millions of religious people who are not part of the Judaic tree let alone Christian.

And out of those millions, a large chunk are not wide-eyed superstitious people who ignore common sense.

Speaking for myself, I am a Pagan who practices astrology. I do not think science is wrong. In fact I don't even see a contradiction. While in the ancient world, particularly the Classical period, but also in other places, they may not have had science as we know it today. But they had inquiries and knew some things that modern science discovered later. The Greeks knew the world was round, rotated around the Sun, and even had a close estimate of how big the Earth is.

No they weren't perfect. However the inquiry of knowledge was not considered contradictory to relgion. Today many Hindu philosophers and priests do the same thing. They know that there is a physical and literal world but they can deal with the metaphysical world at the same time.

There really isn't a real contradiction except from the materialistic science half who do not understand metaphysical philosophy, and from the religious half who do not understand science and in some cases what their own religion is about.

One thing that religion should NOT be about is stupidity and ignorance. One can still follow tradition and ancient philosophy and live in the modern world. Our brains are supposed to be flexible and be used.

And guys, I have always learned that when arguing over a concept, we must agree on the terms. Atheism does not mean "one who experiences life more deeply" or "not stopping at what the Bible says."

Atheism means that you do not believe in divinity. Period. If you believe in something else then you are not an atheist. Here is what Merriam-Webster says (unfortunately I don't have an OED handy, but this works):

2 a : a disbelief in the existence of deity b : the doctrine that there is no deity

There are six types of theisms:

Atheism - belief in no deity
Monotheism - Belief in one deity
Polytheism - belief in more than one deity
Pantheism - belief that divinity is everywhere
Henotheism - belief in a personal deity, but you still believe in other deities
Kathenothesim - belief in a personal deity for a ceratain time, and a different one at another time. This might sound wierd today, but an example is when in the ancient world, you might have a personal god, but then during a large festival you might exalt another deity for that time.

You are right on this. The actual problem is that Adam and Eve do not keep their faith and trust in God and his Word.

The whole 'knowledge of good and evil' is not explored other than it being something they figured was worth losing faith for.

You ca;t pick and choose which parts of the bible (or any book) you want to believe. ther is no pointin the bible which says "well this is a metaphore for that" and "but don;t kill your family anymore, that was the olden days" the only religions views that I can respect are fundamentalists, by saying you are christian or old testament based, and not killing me for thinking different, you are going against your religion...and going to hell.

They kept their faith in god, all that they did was open their minds, and see what the other options are...it is wrong to believe something without knowing the other options. after they are the fruit they didn;t decide to ignore god. and the "knowledge of good and evil" is a theme that is repeated many times in the bible.

The religion that you explain....well it isn;t religion, all that you said about it is that they used the stars to see how big the earth is..that is math, not religion....where is the religious part to that?

Ikdens story is true, duhhh. Everyone knows that X religion is correct because they believe it.

Just because something is comforting and you REALLY believeit....doesn;t make it true. People need to get past the whole idea that believing is making something true and realise that there is no proof. If god really did make all these miracles then the world which we live in would be completely irrational and bushes would catch on fire and talk to people and all sorts of crazy stufff would happen with no explanation

Just because you heard an argument 15 years ago doesn;t mean you don't need to defend it now...

I see yo'r point, but I don't think that I am "attacking" someone elses religion. I see it as more of a discussion, the sharing of ideas so that we can all better understand eachother....some like to take that and turn it into this great arugment where they hate everyone...allI want to do is open at least one persons mind to the objective.

And if you want to get technical, religion is the number one source of war and power....so shouldn't that have you worried more than some guys on the internet going "You fail to adequately assess the statements stated in your propesition furthering the statement in your second post which defends the likelehood of an origion of-" you get the idea.

did i say you as in you yourself were attacking someones elses religion ? and technically you missed out greed and corruption is also a source of war and power .as for failing mankind it has definatley failed " i get the idea .
