Can someone please explain to me why the seperatists seem to think it's such a great idea to seperate? Would that actually benefit anyone from an economic or security point of view or is it more a matter of Francophones wanting to live based on different laws or traditions than the rest of Canada? If someone would like to enlighten me I've never been able to understand the whole seperatist idea... All I can see it doing is screwing up trade and travel within Canada, and driving a wedge between Francophones and Anglophones in places where they live peacefully together like here in Winnipeg (St Boniface).
The concept that Nations deserve to self-govern and have a right to self-determination? It's pretty self explanatory.
It's mostly a question of culture...if we don't do something, english will eventually take over Quebec, weither we like to admit it or not. It's a scary thing to see your culture and language disappear like smoke. We're a very distinct society, there's just no other way of putting it. We don't relate much to the rest of canada (culturally, mainly). It's like...picture it like this... Germany is the rest of canada..and the Czech Republic is Quebec. They just don't mix...different political views, different culture, different language, different EVERYTHINGGGG!!. What most people fear is the economy when it comes to seperating, understandibly. Yes, we will be in debt to some extent, but an economy is like anything else within a society, you have to build up to it in order for it to be strong, and that takes time, evidently. France have been great supporters since the begining with Levesque, we do have support out of america, which is a good thing to recognize. The rest of canada doesn't see a point to it maybe, but it wouldn't change anything for the rest of canadians if they remain understanding and supportive. It's just something we need to build up to, and we need time and support for that, as simple as that. We would not be screwing up trade, we aren't changing anything relating to that, all the trade would still be perfectly accepted on our side, it's ignorant fucks like the STATES (list goes on..) that have a problem with it..WHY? who the fuck knows...Travel?? HAH, dude, people would be floding in like flies on cow shit all wanting to know what the big buzz is about, why we're such an interesting society. I don't see how seperating would diminish the amount of travel within quebec. Basicly, there's one thing getting in the way of all of this change, and in all honesty m'friends, that thing is COWARDICE. bah, anyway...moving on...
I'm not sure I see any cowardice in refusing Quebec its separatist wish. It's rather inverted the other way around. It insists it's so different and lovely - well, why aren't you strong enough to resist the "English" then? I find it rather hilarious that the "English" of the west are just lumped together. Easterners are so full of themselves. No personal offence, mate. As if politics is not already so full of shit!
no cowardice? it's the fear of the economy collapsing that's influencing most quebecers to vote against the seperatist movement!! the lack of courage in trusting in their own nation!! now that is pure cowardice. and this isn't a question of strength, there's nothing we can do about it, we can inforce laws (e.g lois 101), etc, but that we can't refuse english migration towards our province!! (this migration influences the less and less french speaking population)
If they want to seperate, then let them. Personally I don't understand it, I mean isn't being multicultural what Canada is all about, letting people live with their religions and cultures of choice, so what makes Quebec so special? Statements like "I'm a proud Quebecer and not a Canadian" basically piss me off to put it lightly. They are a part of this country and they should be proud of it. You are a part of Canada therefore you are Canadian. No different then someone else say a muslim coming to live in Canada, speaking their language at home and in their group of friends, living their cultures and traditions out. They are still now Canadian. But saying that they did seperate well then what's to stop all the first nations from trying to claim a chunk of land and becoming their own nation too? They have their own language, a unique culture. And then other smaller groups. I think it just defeats the whole idea of multicultalism in Canada. It seperates people, instead of uniting. Personally I'm dead sick of hearing about the issue.
If it were YOUR culture, YOUR nation and YOUR language that was being attacked you would think very differently.
I fail to see how people not agreeing with your province seperating, is a form of attack. I think Canada has been pretty accomedating of the Quebec people. You fly your own flag. You have your own language. Everything in your province is marked in that language. Everyone in Canada is forced to learn your language. Which makes me tired of hearing about you whine, but I don't feel anyone is attcking you, you have your culture, you have your language, your way of life, so stop whining and enjoy it.
The concept that Nations deserve to self-govern and have a right to self-determination? It's pretty self explanatory. What most people fear is the economy when it comes to seperating Do Subsidies trump nationalism ?
Diversity is what makes this country great. And whether or not you want to admit it, you are part of this country. I personally think Canada is a beautiful country, and the differences in cultures between provinces/territories is what makes it so beautiful. Everywhere you go, there is something new and different and exciting to see. And I hardly think anyone from the "rest" of Canada is trying to trump your culture. Where, when, why, and how? Explain this to me, because I've never seen this. I grew up in Alberta, and a big part of my Canadian history lessons was learning about, understanding, and embracing Quebec and it's culture. Which included learning the language. I'm not trying to fight you or attack you on this, so don't take me wrong. I'm just saying, personally, I don't agree with the sepratist idea. Amen.
It would be pretty cool if Quebec was its own nation because I live right near Quebec and it would be cool if there was Canada and Quebec near me, two separate nations!
_Wax_, I see what you are saying, but as a person who been to nearly every province in Canada, I can honestly say Quebec is not that different. Ontario and BC are just a liberal as Quebec. Yukon, NWT and Nunavut all have different languages much like Quebec. Winnipeg and Halifax have very distinct cultures much like Quebec. Every province has its own unique qualities. I guess if Quebec would truely like to seperate, then that would be ok, but Quebec recieves a lot of help from the rest of the country when it comes to the economy. And even with the political seperation, there would still be no stopping the English language and the North American values from overloading the unique Quebec culture...it is happening world wide, not just in Quebec. Being a key part of Canada has a lot more advantages than disadvantages IMO. I hope the french culture stays rich and vibrant at its roots, because that is where it is most important.
I have to agree with this COMPLETELY. I have never seen any mass movement by the people to go AGAINST Quebec. My entire schooling revolved around learning about Quebec and French culture. For christ's sake, there are thousands of French schools across the nation.... How many other countries in the world recognize two cultures like we do? Quebec is one of my favorite places in this country... Realisticly, if it became it's own country, i'd move there in a flash....but i still think it's ridiculous to want to seperate yourself from the country your ancestors founded.....and i say this as someone who's great(x3) grandfather travelled the boat and founded montreal. My mother's family name is all over Canadian history.....and it's something i would hate to see butchered. I personally am probably not educated enough on the situaton to even have an opinion, but serious...where is the love? Quebec is the shit. don't leave us!
