just take a look at the file and you will see it becomes easy to understand
and by using first part and last part blocks you can make the blocks even more subtle and refined so you let ok stuff in and keep bad stuff out

This method can and should be used in conjunction with the hosts file method of blocking, the the hosts file is rather crude compared to the script at erichelps.com. This is called a false proxy method
What this does is allow you to block based on a more refined methodology than the hosts files - its completely transparent open source code and can save you a lot of time and money

to research this subject yourself you are looking at
PAC files (Proxy Auto Configuration) and content blocking

 

You can also use the HOSTS file to block out certain sites.
