hey, im really into computers and art, im goin off to college very soon ,and i dont kno where to go and what i want to do with myself, i really like computers, art, traveling, and psychology, (im not great at math), also i type veryyy very fast without lookin at the keyboard maybe that could help.... does anyone have any ideaz or suggestions as in what i should do or what i should look into in the future?
Software Engineer. you can combine art, psycology, computers, and typing skills; probably even travel. you can design graphical interfaces that are attractive(art) and easy on the user(psycology), and if you learn linux/unix, fast (typing skills may help but not necessary anymore)
Want to make some buck$ when you get out? Make sure to take all the courses in RPG III and RPG IV you can get. The companies that have lots invested in custom programming for their IBM AS400 and similar systems are NOT going to dump everything and start over, and RPG programmers are very hard to find. Even here in the sticks, an RPG programmer with 3 years experience (or equivalent education) starts in the $60k range, much more in the cities. In most places you don't even have to take a regular job, you can do as much (or as little) contract work as you like. Perfect job for a hippy who wants to eat something besides lentils every night. [grin]
i just thought of this. how about gaming developer. i contribute to the free and open-source gaming world development team by building maps. its kinda an art to me. very fun.
game developer? what do i do?! create characters and create game themes and environments?! ALSO can i take these classes in famous community colleges u think?!
Animation studios are always on the lookout for artists who want to learn 3d techniques and apply themselves to creating virtual worlds etc. You could also make quite a career out of more disciplined artistic endevours by looking into the world of CAD - which is basically visual mapping of engineering problems. Infact people often overlook the fact that art is a discipline needed in architecture and engineering. Another application of your skills would be in games design and real world mapping where they use statistics to map real life scenarios for various computer simulations theres quite a lot you can do. The obvious ones are games and advertising - pop videos - etc but those markets are saturated and its difficult to get a break at companies that are going places. The less obvious ones may get you a more secure career and in the longrun earn you more money - but one thing is vital and thats a really good portfolio. The sooner you start learning the software and creating what you can, the better it is. Willingness and aptitude are key in that area of art and computers. I'd say youre better off looking into industrial applications for your art and computer skills rather than looking to join creative studios - its just as tasking but with greater rewards earlier on in your career and then that would enable you to switch to the creative side later when you have a proven track record
CAD and games are completely different though. i have taken classes for both and my father is an engineer.
computer science is a broad course, (that's an advantage and a disadvantage) anyway, on the lighter side, computing or information tech can be applied to different fields. you should try to research about web, game or multimedia development or even graphic design. goodluck! __________________ Australian Job Listing
