SDS, the students for a democratic society has been re-formed and is now building a student base nationwide. SDS was the group which organized many of the student protests of the 60's. Though the organization was disbanded in the early 70's, it was re-formed in 2003. you can look at their web site here: www.studentsforademocraticsociety.org/ And if you're not a student, you can also join their non-student wing, MDS, the movement for a democratic society. That's what I did. http://www.movementforademocraticsociety.org/ Aside from organizing events, they also have an email newsletter/mail list where you can post anouncments, news bullitiens, etc. This is great news for any one interested in political dissent. So let's get out there and get active!
Great news! These new student activists would do well to study some of the early manifestos of the original SDS, such as the "Port Huron Statement". It shows some of the thinking that has to go into forming a strong progressive movement.
They put the old documents across the mail list all the time so the members can read them. I don't know if anybody put on the Port Huron Statement, but if you can tell me where to get a copy, I will gladly post it myself. I would say someone did post it, I just haven't seen it on there. Of course, anybody who wants to join the group and post to the list can do so here: http://www.studentsforademocraticsociety.org/join/mds_membership.cgi Or to just post to the list you can do that from this page: http://lists.riseup.net/www/info/mds
