I got into a marijuana conversation with one of my old college professors and he told me that weed really isn't that good for you. We did that whole shuffle with weeds better than tobacco and he agreed but, then he said that our brain doesn't allow us have too much pleasure. He said that our brain has negative feedback mechanisms that counteract the pleasure weed gives us. For example when we're high and feeling good, a negative feedback mechanism may be paranoia or a really bad crash or come down. He said that could be really bad for our mental health. The shit interested the fuck out of me but, what do you think? I say it depends on the people because I don't get paranoid that much any more and I never crash.

I don't exactly understand why he thinks the negative counteraction theory would happen. I mean, it makes a lot of sense, it is just the body naturally balancing itself out, which is pretty common with all living things. But that would mean that whenever a person feels really terrible, there would have to be somekind of positive lift created by his own body. You should definately ask more about it if you ever get the chance again, professors are the shit to talk to about bud. I definately think that there are negative consequences caused by marijuana, though. If you spend all day getting high, then it may inhibit your ability to enjoy sober life. That has happened to me a couple of times in my life, but once you realize whats happening it is pretty easy to get your shit together quickly. Also, in the same way non-smokers can't understand certain things that are obvious to smokers, extreme potheads can sometimes be blind to some things that most people would consider common sense. I've seen this a lot, for example a kid that gets expelled from high schools or arrested over and over again because of their monstrous weed habit and refuses to stop smoking or cut down. It is good when there is actually an intelligent post in the "Stoners Lounge".

Yeah I can see where he's coming from... But weed doesn't really bring you "up" enough to bring you "down" a significant amount. I don't have a whole lot of experience with anything harder than weed, but I could see harder drugs having that up down effect. Maybe if you smoked a whole shit load of weed for like a few days...? I could see it happening then, that's about it. Also, it does depend on the person, because everyone has different reactions from weed weather it be minor paranoia and things like that.
