Back in 1949,before rock n' roll,I used to listen to a station in LA from a black church--and man the preachers could sing and rock out! This was before blacks were allowed to be on mainstream radio. But surely those guys had a tremendous influence on Ray Charles,Little Richard,Chuck Berry,Fats Domino,The wild man Jerry Lee lewis and many other groups ,white or black, famous or obscure. When I heard Ray and the Raylettes sing "The night is the right time",I knew something big was coming! And it did.
pffft elvis. Yea it's real hard to steal a bunch of music from blacks and call it your own. Did he have any original songs?
Every one on that list had something special to contribute. I voted for Dylan, but I am a HUGE Hendrix fan. Jimi was greatly influenced by Dylan. In fact, most groups in the 60s covered a Dylan tune or 2
I haven't voted yet,it's a very difficult choice! All this people are very important in different ways.I think that there can't be a greatest one, first of all because it depends on everyone's opinion, and than because they belonged to different music styles.I'd probably choose Jim Morrison,or Janis Joplin, because they are the two people who had,and are still having a deep influence on me.Jim,because of his fascinating voice, absurd songs, and nice poems;Janis because of her voice too, that was so particular, and her personality, she was Strong outside, but very fragile inside...Very few pwople really understood her
As much as I don't like Elvis (he tried to get my favorite band kicked out of the U.S.) he did have some influence in getting rock started, but there are so many others out there that were before him. I do think that The Beatles really helped out with artists doing studio recordings and messing around with different effects and whatnot. Again there are too many for me to really choose they all had a part in shaping rock and roll!
By the way that the question was structured;I thought it was implying who got 'Rock'n'Roll' off the starting blocks & that was in no small part:'Mr. P'.:elvis:
