3/4 of americans support the loss of freedom of speech

"Three-quarters of the 1,001 adults questioned do not believe that "people should be allowed to place sexually explicit material on the Internet," and only 10 percent strongly support that right"

the article goes on to say "About 58 percent of adults polled believe that public libraries should block access to Web sites that might offend some patrons and the US government should develop a system to rate information online"

how can people be so dumb? i understand that some people believe porn and stuff to be wrong, but to take away your right to have porn would mean that freedom of speech and press is gone. they say thats its only porn. but it will eventually lead to other things.

the government is slowly and steadily trying to take away rights and control its population. and the american people are so dumb, they end up helping the govt do this and dont even know it. blinded by their self-rightous religious views.

the last statement of the article sums up america's hypocracy by saying "For instance, Americans cite freedom of speech as more important than any other right -- including right to bear arms or right to privacy -- but when it comes to specifics like the freedom to publish erotic magazines, only 45 percent say that's acceptable."

I support their right to publish to the web, but I do have a problem with the way they conduct they businesses...the programming that forces redirection of your browser, the neverending string of popups that happen when you accidently click on a link to their sites. The mislabeling of their sites so that clicking on a search engine entry takes you to a porn site when that has nothing to do with the subject matter of your search. Most of us now have enough security and plugins in place that these things don't happen any longer on the grand scale they did in the late nineties and early 2000s. But they abused the technology. I think they are going to have to demonstrate that they are only interested now in presenting their material to adults that voluntarily and legally should have access to it.

 

By the way I worked for a library in the seventies for ten years. We had an "X" rated section that was only available to adults or children with signed adult permission. We did have Lady Chatterly in our collection but it wasn't out in the general stacks.

 

I think kids should read that.

 

My mom signed a waver for me when I was twelve and I read it. I had full access to whatever was in the collection.

Don't think I understood half of it until I reread it later in my twenties.

 

I think that is the key. access and content should be in part monitored by parents.
Obviously some explicit material [kiddie porn/exploitation/barney the dino' website] should be removed and those involved strung up by their balls.

 

yea, but this wasnt about child porn. its not even about porn. its the fact that people are so willing to throw away their freedoms that disgusts me

 

What is wrong with people?? I agree with you that the government is slowly trying to take away our rights... I definitly sense that too. The thing is everything offends somebody. What I'm saying right now would offend someone. There's no getting around that. I understand people feel strongly about porn but we have to right to get off, don't we? Sex isn't always a dirty thing.. But I see, as you do, that its bigger than that. Our freedom of speech IS the most important.. I can't believe more people can't see this..

 

well, it's already happening in my school. They already censored like half of internet sites on the school computers.


Oh and at my brother's school they arn't allowed to draw in there agenda..

 

Fair enough. I do think in peoples home it should be upto the individual. In a public place upto the person who owns it [tough shit if you don't like the policy]. If you want to download a lot of porn, that 'freedom' is never going to be taken away. You might get a few 'this is 18 certificated content' which is pretty pointless i agree.

Some level of censorship and or barriers should be in place within certain places.
